Never did I think I would see the day where Ammit ๐๐ ๐ ๐ was the main villain on a Marvel tv show but here we are! Letโs learn a bit about the Ammit ๐๐ ๐ ๐ from Egyptian ๐๐๐๐ mythology – there are some similarities to the Ammit ๐๐ ๐ ๐ we saw on Moon Knight! In ancient Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐, Ammit ๐๐ ๐ ๐ was not formally worshipped ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ข in any formal cult (unlike on Moon Knight) and the Egyptians ๐๐๐๐๐ช saw her as a goddess ๐น๐ to be feared and overcome!
Ammit ๐๐ ๐ ๐ was a combination of animals that were most feared by the ancient Egyptians ๐๐๐๐๐ช: she had the head ๐ถ๐บ of a crocodile ๐ ๐ด๐๐, the neck and mane of a lion ๐ณ๐น๐ฟ๐, and the rear of a hippopotamus ๐๐๐ฏ! Since she was the combination of both land and marine animals there was no escaping Ammitโs ๐๐ ๐ ๐ wrath no matter where you went!
Ammit ๐๐ ๐ ๐ was known as โthe devourerโ or โeater of heartsโ and her name ๐๐ means โfemale devourerโ or โfemale devourer of the dead.โ That is in reference to Ammitโs ๐๐ ๐ ๐ role in the Weighing of the Heart of the deceased ๐ ๐๐ฑ; if the deceased ๐ ๐๐ฑ led a life full of bad deeds, Ammit ๐๐ ๐ ๐ would eat their heart ๐๐๐ฃ when it weighed more than Maatโs ๐๐ด๐ฃ๐๐ฆ feather. When Ammit ๐๐ ๐ ๐ eat their heart ๐๐๐ฃ, the deceased ๐ ๐๐ฑ would not be granted access to the Duat ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ (afterlife).
