Whenever people see an Egyptian artifact that looks like a jackal ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฅ, they think itโs Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ, however, there are other canine deities ๐น๐น๐น in the Egyptian pantheon! This small ๐๐๐ด๐ ฉ statue ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ depicts the god ๐น Wepwawet ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง who was known as “The Opener of the Ways!”ย
Wepwawet ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง is associated with Abydos ๐๐๐๐ and is likely the oldest god ๐น associated with the jackal ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฅ! Wepwawet ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง has been depicted on objects that even pre-date the Narmer ๐ข๐ Palette ๐๐๐๐ฑ! Wepwawet ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง is associated with war and conquest, and leading ritual processions.
Wepwawet ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง was depicted as either a jackal ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฅ or a wolf ๐น๐๐๐๐ฒ๐ and one of the best ways to distinguish between Wepwawet ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง and Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ is by looking for their names ๐๐๐ฆ in hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช since they are artistically very similar looking!
Another way to tell Wepwawet ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง and Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ apart is by how the jackal is standing: Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ is usually shown in the recumbent position (๐ข, ๐ฃ, ๐ค) while Wepwawet ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง is usually shown standing up (๐ง, ๐จ).
Wepwawetโs ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง name ๐๐ translates to โOpener of the Ways,โ which has many meanings. He was associated with clearing the path for the sun ๐ณ๐บ to rise in the sky ๐ช๐๐ฏ, clearing the way for the armies in battle, and clearing the path for the deceased to enter the Duat ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐. Statues ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ๐ช of Wepwawet ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง were also carried in front of a pharaoh ๐๐ป during processions for this reason!
Other variants of Wepwawetโs name ๐๐ include:
๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง
๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ข
๐๐
๐๐๐๐
๐๐๐๐๐ญ
