Tour of Gallery 122

Letโ€™s go on a tour of Gallery 122 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art!

One of my favorite things about the Metropolitan Museum of Art are these little โ€œhiddenโ€ galleries that are off-shoots of the main galleries! Gallery 122, is one of my favorites because this gallery houses many Amarna-era pieces along with pieces from the 19th Dynasty! The 18th and 19th Dynasties are my favorite parts of Egyptian History!

There are so many little and wonderful hidden treasures in these rooms! They may not be the โ€œbig-ticket must-seeโ€ artifacts, but they have their own unique charms and history and I love them!

Among the pieces in this gallery are Amarna-age trial pieces, broken pieces of statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–/Nefertiti ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“‡๐“๐“ญ, many different ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figures, flowers ๐“†ผ๐“…ฑ๐“†ฐ๐“ฆ from the funeral of Tutankhamun ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“‹น๐“‹พ๐“‰บ๐“‡“, a wooden statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ƒฃ, lots of pottery ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡‹๐“‹ shards and so much more!

I hope you enjoy this little gallery tour!

Statuette of Amenhotep III (Video)

Did you know that more statues ๐“„š๐“ˆ–๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ๐“ช of Amenhotep III ๐“‡ณ๐“ง๐“Ž  have survived compared to any other 18th Dynasty pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป? One of the more interesting ones is this statuette of Amenhotep III ๐“‡ณ๐“ง๐“Ž !

This is a very interesting statuette of Amenhotep III ๐“‡ณ๐“ง๐“Ž ! Amenhotep the III ๐“‡ณ๐“ง๐“Ž  was the father ๐“‡‹๐“๐“€€ of the infamous pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–.  Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– was originally named Amenhotep IV ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Šต๐“Šน๐“‹พ๐“Œ€, until he changed his name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– to reflect the Aten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ and his change to the Egyptian religion.

The first thing that struck me about this statuette was the artistic style. It seems to be very grounded in realism, which is odd because most pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฆ wanted to be depicted as being in peak physical condition. It also illustrates some aspects of Amarna-style art, such as the previously mentioned realism and the sagging/exaggerated belly.

This piece almost seems to be a precursor to the Amarna-style. I find these transition-type pieces so interesting because it seems like the Amarna-style art came out of nowhere, however, pieces like this show us that was not the case.

The statuette of Amenhotep III ๐“‡ณ๐“ง๐“Ž  is made of ebony wood ๐“†ฑ๐“๐“บ and has glass inlaid eyes ๐“น๐“๐“ฆ and eyebrows. It consists of the pharaoh standing on a base, and the base contains hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช.

The hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช on the base are thought to refer to one of Amenhotep IIIโ€™s ๐“‡ณ๐“ง๐“Ž  Heb Sed  ๐“Ž›๐“ƒ€๐“‹ด๐“‚ง๐“๐“Žฑ๐“‡ณ๐“ช festivals (he ruled for 38 years). The Heb Sed Festival ๐“Ž›๐“ƒ€๐“‹ด๐“‚ง๐“๐“Žฑ๐“‡ณ๐“ช, also known as the โ€œ30 Year Jubilee,โ€ was meant to celebrate the 30th year of a pharaohโ€™s ๐“‰๐“‰ป reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ and then subsequent years afterwards. The hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช on the base also contain errors, which means it is probably of non-royal production.

The exact purpose of the statuette is unknown, but it is thought that it could have been used in a household shrine ๐“‰๐“บ to the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป. Household ๐“‰๐“บ statues/shrines actually became popular during the reign of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–. This would also support the idea that this was of non-royal production.

Ushabtis of Nauny โ€“ Video

Letโ€™s look at some ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figures! Gallery 126 at the MET has lot of ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ on display and I LOVE being in this room! These ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figures and shabti boxes belong to a woman ๐“Šƒ๐“๐“‚‘๐“๐“ named Nauny, who lived during the 21st Dynasty reign of the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Psusennes I ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Œป๐“…ฎ๐“‡ผ๐“ˆ๐“ˆ–๐“Š–.

The ushabti figures ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ that Nauny was buried with are made of blue ๐“‡‹๐“น๐“๐“„ฟ๐“ธ๐“ฅ faience ๐“‹ฃ๐“ˆ–๐“๐“ธ๐“ผ and have featured and inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ on them that are painted ๐“ž๐“œ with black ๐“†Ž๐“…“ paint ๐“‡จ๐“‚‹๐“…ฑ๐“ญ๐“ธ๐“ฆ.

Nauny was buried with a total of 393 ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figures that were divided amongst seven ๐“€ shabti boxes. The shabti boxes are made of sycamore ๐“ˆ–๐“‰”๐“๐“†ญ wood ๐“†ฑ๐“๐“บ and painted ๐“ž๐“œ with stucco. As demonstrated in the video ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“, the ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ๐“ช are stored in an upright position in the box!

Normally a person was buried with 365 ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figures โ€“ one for each day of the year, however, there were also overseer ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ who would make sure the โ€œregular ushabtisโ€ (which are actually known as โ€œworker ushabtisโ€) weโ€™re doing their jobs!

Book of the Dead of Sobekmose โ€“ Video

One of the greatest aspects of the Brooklyn Museumโ€™s Egyptian collection is The Book of the Dead ๐“‰๐“‚‹๐“๐“‚ป๐“…“๐“‰”๐“‚‹๐“ฒ๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“ผ๐“บ for a man named Sobekmose, who had the title โ€œGoldworker of Amun.โ€ Sobekmose was buried in Memphis ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹๐“‰ด๐“Š– and that is where this papyrus ๐“…“๐“‘๐“๐“› was found. This Book of the Dead ๐“‰๐“‚‹๐“๐“‚ป๐“…“๐“‰”๐“‚‹๐“ฒ๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“ผ๐“บ dates to the 18th Dynasty (early New Kingdom 1500-1480 B.C.E.).

This Book of the Dead ๐“‰๐“‚‹๐“๐“‚ป๐“…“๐“‰”๐“‚‹๐“ฒ๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“ผ๐“บ is displayed as one complete papyrus ๐“…“๐“‘๐“๐“› which is incredible to see! The papyrus ๐“…“๐“‘๐“๐“› is curved, due to either 1) being made that way or 2) getting warped over thousands of years being rolled up in a tomb ๐“‡‹๐“‡ฉ๐“Šƒ๐“‰!

The Book of the Dead ๐“‰๐“‚‹๐“๐“‚ป๐“…“๐“‰”๐“‚‹๐“ฒ๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“ผ๐“บ is interesting because it doesnโ€™t follow a particular story.  The spells ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“›๐“ฆ do seem to be grouped by theme, and sometimes pictures ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“ฆ can be representative of the spells ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“›๐“ฆ as well.

The Book of the Dead ๐“‰๐“‚‹๐“๐“‚ป๐“…“๐“‰”๐“‚‹๐“ฒ๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“ผ๐“บ contained instructions/spells ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“›๐“ฆ for the deceased ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ as they made their way through the Duat ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“๐“‰. The red ๐“‚ง๐“ˆ™๐“‚‹๐“…Ÿ text that you see is used to indicate the start of a new spell ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“›, the end of a spell ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“›, or the names ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–๐“ฅ of certain mythological figures.

Ushabtis are My Favorite โ€“ Video

Nonno and I are co-presidents of the Ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ fan club! As much as I also love the Temple of Dendur at the MET, nothing beats seeing all of the different types of ushabti ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ figures on display! Seeing the ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ makes me so happy!

Fun Facts about Ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figures:

  1. The ushabtis ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ served as substitutes for the deceased ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ and would perform labor or jobs for them in the afterlife ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“๐“‰.
  2. Ushabtis are usually inscribed with specific spells ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“›๐“ฆ which assigned each ushabti ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ to a certain task! The most popular one is the โ€œShabti Spell.โ€
  3. Ushabtis can be made of many different types of materials such as faience ๐“‹ฃ๐“ˆ–๐“๐“ธ๐“ผ, wood ๐“†ฑ๐“๐“บ, clay ๐“Šช๐“ˆ–๐“‹ด๐“ˆ‡, limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ and rarely even bronze ๐“ˆ”๐“ค๐“ˆ’๐“ฆ!
  4. People who could afford it were buried with over 400 ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ ushabtis  ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ๐“ช! Usually there were 365 ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“พ worker ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ๐“ช (one for each day of the year) and then overseer ushabtis!

My Nonno loved ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ๐“ช so much and would tell my sister ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“๐“ and I stories about them! I love these statues so much and I may be among their biggest fans โ€“ I cannot get enough of them!

Talatat โ€“ Video

These small ๐“ˆ–๐“†“๐“‹ด๐“…ฉ limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ blocks are called โ€œTalatatโ€ and were used solely during the reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ of the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ–! These were used in the construction of the Aten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ temple ๐“‰Ÿ๐“๐“‰ at Karnak (this construction started when he was still Amenhotep IV ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Šต๐“Šน๐“‹พ๐“Œ€) and the palace ๐“‚๐“Ž›๐“๐“‰ฅ๐“‰ at Akhetaten ๐“ˆŒ๐“๐“‰๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“Š–. Akhetaten ๐“ˆŒ๐“๐“‰๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“Š– was the capital of Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– during the reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ–.

These limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ blocks were unique because they were so small ๐“ˆ–๐“†“๐“‹ด๐“…ฉ a single worker could carry them and put it into place. This was meant to expedite construction and make building a lot faster. The Talatat are also unique because they were only used during the reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ–, and were never used again.

Even though originally from Amarna ๐“ˆŒ๐“๐“‰๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“Š–, these Talatat were actually found at Hermopolis because after Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ– reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“, his monuments ๐“ ๐“ were destroyed and building materials were used by other pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฆ!

These Talatat at the MET were once brightly painted in striking colors, as was most of the Egyptian monuments ๐“ ๐“. A lot of the colors you see on these blocks are restored and not necessarily the original colors.

Tens of thousands of Talatat have been found across Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š–.

The Royal Titularly of Hatshepsut โ€“ Video

Letโ€™s read some Hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! In ancient Egypt many pharaohs had five names, so letโ€™s learn the Royal Titularly of Hatshepsut!

This stela ๐“Ž—๐“…ฑ๐“†“๐“‰ธ is one of my absolute favorite pieces because depicts Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช and Thutmosis III ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ during their joint reign. Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช is wearing the blue crown ๐“†ฃ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ™๐“‹™ and making an offering of nemset jars ๐“Œ๐“Œ๐“Œ to Amun-Ra ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“บ. The stela ๐“Ž—๐“…ฑ๐“†“๐“‰ธ was meant to commemorate restoration works in Thebes ๐“Œ€๐“๐“Š–!

The Royal Titularly of Hatshepsut

The most interesting parts about this stela is that it is one of two pieces (that I know of) that contains Hatshepsutโ€™s entire titulary in one place! The only other place I know that has all of Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช names ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–๐“ฆ is the Obelisk at Karnak.

Letโ€™s take a closer look at all of Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช names ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–๐“ฆ! The names ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–๐“ฆ can be found on the top two rows of hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช on the bottom of the stela ๐“Ž—๐“…ฑ๐“†“๐“‰ธ!

Horus Name: ๐“„Š๐“‹ด๐“๐“‚“๐“‚“๐“‚“ โ€“ โ€œWosretkauโ€ translates to โ€œThe Mighty of the Kasโ€ or โ€œThe Mighty of the Souls.โ€

Nebty Name: ๐“…’๐“‡…๐“๐“†ณ๐“†ณ๐“†ณ โ€“ โ€œWadjet renputโ€ translates to โ€œFlourishing of Years.โ€

Golden Horus Name: ๐“…‰๐“Šน๐“๐“ˆ๐“ฆ โ€“ โ€œNetjeret khauโ€ translates to โ€œDivine of Appearances.โ€

The Royal Titularly of Hatshepsut
The Golden Horus Name of Hatshepsut

Throne Name: ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ โ€“ โ€œMaatkareโ€ translates to โ€œTruth is the Soul of Re.โ€

The Royal Titularly of Hatshepsut
The Throne Name of Hatshepsut

Birth Name: ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“„‚๐“€ผ โ€“ โ€œKhnemet Amun Hatshepsutโ€ translates to โ€œUnited with Amun, Foremost of the Noble Women.โ€ This version of the Birth Name that appears on this stela is a variant of ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช. A โ€œvariantโ€ is just a different way to spell out a personโ€™s name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–!

Inner Cartonnage of Gautseshenu โ€“ Video

This stunningly painted piece is the Inner Cartonnage of a person named Gautseshenu. This piece would have been placed inside a larger coffin and is made of cartonnage (ancient paper mache). It is dated to the 25th Dynasty (Third Intermediate Period). It was found in Thebes ๐“Œ€๐“๐“Š– and itโ€™s amazing how well preserved it is and how bright the colors are.

The Weighing of the Heart scene from the Book of the Dead ๐“‰๐“‚‹๐“๐“‚ป๐“…“๐“‰”๐“‚‹๐“ฒ๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“ผ๐“บ is my absolute favorite type of religious art from ancient Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š–. As a kid, I loved it because Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ข was the central god ๐“Šน in the scene, and Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ข is my favorite Egyptian god ๐“Šน . As an adult, I love what the scene represents and the symbolism behind it.

For those unfamiliar with the context of the scene, Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ข weighs the heart ๐“‡‹๐“ƒ€๐“„ฃ of the deceased ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ against Maatโ€™s ๐“Œด๐“™๐“‚ฃ๐“๐“ฆ feather. If Anubis determines thereโ€™s balance between the two, then the deceased would be presented to Osiris ๐“น๐“Šจ ๐“€ญ by Horus ๐“…ƒ๐“€ญ. The simplified version of the scene represented on this cartonnage is missing Thoth ๐“…ค๐“€ญ and Ammit ๐“‚๐“…“๐“…“๐“.

If youโ€™re looking at the inner cartonnage/coffin ๐“…ฑ๐“‡‹๐“€พ from the front, you can see Khepri ๐“†ฃ๐“‚‹๐“‡‹๐“›(the winged beetle) and the Four Sons of Horus beneath him. I feel like this coffin ๐“…ฑ๐“‡‹๐“€พ is the Sparks Notes version of the Book of the Dead ๐“‰๐“‚‹๐“๐“‚ป๐“…“๐“‰”๐“‚‹๐“ฒ๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“ผ๐“บ โ€“ it kinda gives you some of the most important parts of it in a very small amount of space!
