One of my favorite things about the Metropolitan Museum of Art are these little โhiddenโ galleries that are off-shoots of the main galleries! This is Gallery 122, and itโs one of my favorites because this gallery houses many Amarna-era pieces along with pieces from the 19th Dynasty! The 18th and 19th Dynasties are my favorite parts of Egyptian History! There are so many little and wonderful hidden treasures in these rooms! They may not be the โbig-ticket must-seeโ artifacts, but they have their own unique charms and history and I love them! Among the pieces in this gallery are Amarna-age trial pieces, broken pieces of statues ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ of Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐/Nefertiti ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ค๐ค๐ค๐ค๐ค๐๐๐ญ, many different ushabti ๐ ฑ๐๐๐๐ญ๐พ figures, flowers ๐ผ๐ ฑ๐ฐ๐ฆ from the funeral of Tutankhamun ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ฑ๐๐น๐พ๐บ๐, a wooden statue ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ of Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ, lots of pottery ๐ ๐๐๐ shards and so much more! Did you know that more statues ๐๐๐๐ญ๐พ๐ช of Amenhotep III ๐ณ๐ง๐ have survived compared to any other 18th Dynasty pharaoh ๐๐ป? One of the more interesting ones is this statuette of Amenhotep III ๐ณ๐ง๐ !
Did you know that more statues ๐๐๐๐ญ๐พ๐ช of Amenhotep III ๐ณ๐ง๐ have survived compared to any other 18th Dynasty pharaoh ๐๐ป? This is a very interesting statuette of Amenhotep III ๐ณ๐ง๐ ! Amenhotep the III ๐ณ๐ง๐ was the father ๐๐๐ of the infamous pharaoh ๐๐ป Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐. Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ was originally named Amenhotep IV ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐น๐พ๐, until he changed his name ๐๐ to reflect the Aten ๐๐๐๐ณ and his change to the Egyptian religion. The first thing that struck me about this statuette was the artistic style. It seems to be very grounded in realism, which is odd because most pharaohs ๐๐ป๐ฆ wanted to be depicted as being in peak physical condition. It also illustrates some aspects of Amarna-style art, such as the previously mentioned realism and the sagging/exaggerated belly. This piece almost seems to be a precursor to the Amarna-style. I find these transition-type pieces so interesting because it seems like the Amarna-style art came out of nowhere, however, pieces like this show us that was not the case. The statuette is made of ebony wood ๐ฑ๐๐บ and has glass inlaid eyes ๐น๐๐ฆ and eyebrows. It consists of the pharaoh standing on a base, and the base contains hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช. The hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช on the base are thought to refer to one of Amenhotep IIIโs ๐ณ๐ง๐ Heb Sed ๐๐๐ด๐ง๐๐ฑ๐ณ๐ช festivals (he ruled for 38 years). The Heb Sed Festival ๐๐๐ด๐ง๐๐ฑ๐ณ๐ช, also known as the โ30 Year Jubilee,โ was meant to celebrate the 30th year of a pharaohโs ๐๐ป reign ๐พ๐๐ and then subsequent years afterwards. The hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช on the base also contain errors, which means it is probably of non-royal production. The exact purpose of the statuette is unknown, but it is thought that it could have been used in a household shrine ๐๐บ to the pharaoh ๐๐ป. Household ๐๐บ statues/shrines actually became popular during the reign of Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐. This would also support the idea that this was of non-royal production. Letโs read some Hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช! In ancient Egypt many pharaohs had five names! This stela ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ธ is one of my absolute favorite pieces because depicts Hatshepsut ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช and Thutmosis III ๐ณ๐ ๐ฃ during their joint reign. Hatshepsut ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช is wearing the blue crown ๐ฃ๐๐๐ and making an offering of nemset jars ๐๐๐ to Amun-Ra ๐๐ ๐๐ณ๐บ. The stela ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ธ was meant to commemorate restoration works in Thebes ๐๐๐! The most interesting parts about this stela is that it is one of two pieces (that I know of) that contains Hatshepsutโs entire titulary in one place! The only other place I know that has all of Hatshepsutโs ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช names ๐๐๐ฆ is the Obelisk at Karnak. Letโs take a closer look at all of Hatshepsutโs ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช names ๐๐๐ฆ! The names ๐๐๐ฆ can be found on the top two rows of hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช on the bottom of the stela ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ธ! Horus Name: ๐๐ด๐๐๐๐ – โWosretkauโ translates to โThe Mighty of the Kasโ or โThe Mighty of the Souls.โ Nebty Name: ๐ ๐ ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ณ – โWadjet renputโ translates to โFlourishing of Years.โ Golden Horus Name: ๐ ๐น๐๐๐ฆ – โNetjeret khauโ translates to โDivine of Appearances.โ Throne Name: ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ – โMaatkareโ translates to โTruth is the Soul of Re.โ Birth Name: ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐ผ – โKhnemet Amun Hatshepsutโ translates to โUnited with Amun, Foremost of the Noble Women.โ This version of the Birth Name that appears on this stela is a variant of ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช.
Horus Name: ๐๐ด๐๐๐๐ – โWosretkauโ translates to โThe Mighty of the Kasโ or โThe Mighty of the Souls.โ
The Horus Name of Hatshepsut
Nebty Name: ๐ ๐ ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ณ – โWadjet renputโ translates to โFlourishing of Years.โ
The Nebty Name of Hatshepsut
Golden Horus Name: ๐ ๐น๐๐๐ฆ – โNetjeret khauโ translates to โDivine of Appearances.โ
The Golden Horus Name of Hatshepsut
Throne Name: ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ – โMaatkareโ translates to โTruth is the Soul of Re.โ
The Throne Name of Hatshepsut
Birth Name: ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐ผ – โKhnemet Amun Hatshepsutโ translates to โUnited with Amun, Foremost of the Noble Women.โ This version of the Birth Name that appears on this stela is a variant of ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช. A โvariantโ is just a different way to spell out a personโs name ๐๐!

Letโs read some Hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช! In ancient Egypt many pharaohs had five names! This stunningly painted piece is the Inner Cartonnage of a person named Gautseshenu. This piece would have been placed inside a larger coffin and is made of cartonnage (ancient paper mache). It is dated to the 25th Dynasty (Third Intermediate Period). It was found in Thebes ๐๐๐ and itโs amazing how well preserved it is and how bright the colors are.

The Weighing of the Heart scene from the Book of the Dead ๐๐๐๐ป๐ ๐๐๐ฒ๐ณ๐บ๐ผ๐บ is my absolute favorite type of religious art from ancient Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐. As a kid, I loved it because Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ข was the central god ๐น in the scene, and Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ข is my favorite Egyptian god ๐น . As an adult, I love what the scene represents and the symbolism behind it. For those unfamiliar with the context of the scene, Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ข weighs the heart ๐๐๐ฃ of the deceased ๐ ๐๐ฑ against Maatโs ๐ด๐๐ฃ๐๐ฆ feather. If Anubis determines thereโs balance between the two, then the deceased would be presented to Osiris ๐น๐จ ๐ญ by Horus ๐ ๐ญ. The simplified version of the scene represented on this cartonnage is missing Thoth ๐ ค๐ญ and Ammit ๐๐ ๐ ๐. If youโre looking at the coffin ๐ ฑ๐๐พ from the front, you can see Khepri ๐ฃ๐๐๐(the winged beetle) and the Four Sons of Horus beneath him. I feel like this coffin ๐ ฑ๐๐พ is the Sparks Notes version of the Book of the Dead ๐๐๐๐ป๐ ๐๐๐ฒ๐ณ๐บ๐ผ๐บ – it kinda gives you some of the most important parts of it in a very small amount of space!
