Letโs read some Hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช! Here is Week 4 of my Hieroglyphic Vocabulary Word of the Day stories from Instagram all compiled into a video! This week we focused on some of the pharaohs ๐๐ป๐ฆ whose names ๐๐๐ฆ you will commonly see in inscriptions ๐๐๐ฅ!
Here are the names ๐๐๐ฆ we learned this week:
Maatkare ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ (Hatshepsut Throne Name)
Hatshepsut (Foremost of the Noble Women) ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช (Birth Name)
Menkhepperra ๐ณ๐ ๐ฃ (Thutmosis III Throne Name)
Rameses II ๐ณ๐๐ง๐ณ๐๐ (Throne Name)
Rameses II ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ด๐ (Birth Name)
Amenhotep III ๐ณ๐ง๐ (Throne Name)
Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ (Birth Name Variant)
Learning any language – including hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช/Middle Egyptian doesnโt have to be difficult! Learning how to read the names ๐๐๐ฆ of the pharaohs ๐๐ป๐ฆ in their cartouches ๐ ๐๐๐ท๐ฆ is a great place to start because not only do their names ๐๐๐ฆ appear frequently, but itโs a great way to practice the meaning of the hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช!

Did you know that the word for โcow ๐ค๐๐๐๐โ and โbeautiful woman ๐ค๐๐๐๐โ are the same in hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช/the Middle Egyptian language? Well now you do! This is one of my absolute favorite โfun factsโ about hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช and it has been since I was a little girl!

This is one of my absolute favorite โfun factsโ about hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช and it has been since I was a little girl! The root of both of these words is โ๐ค๐๐โ which would probably be pronounced like โnefer.โ This word could mean perfect, beautiful, or good in Middle Egyptian! Adding the โ๐โ to the end of the word makes it feminine, and then the determinative symbol distinguishes the meaning! So โ๐ค๐๐๐โ could also mean a beautiful woman or beautiful/perfect! Both โcow ๐ค๐๐๐๐โ and โbeautiful woman ๐ค๐๐๐๐โ would have probably been pronounced like โneferetโ due to the addition of the uniliteral phonogram of โ๐โ which would have been pronounced like a โt.โ In order to make words pronounceable in modern times, a lot of Egyptologists/linguists will add a soft โeโ sound in between the consonants! Come on a trip to Barnes & Noble with me (one of my favorite places) to look for Ancient Egypt books!
I always head to the ancient Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐ books section and the Star Wars section when I go book ๐ ๐๐๐ shopping!
I was so surprised to see the hieroglyphs book at Barnes & Noble because I have never seen it there before ๐น๐๐ช! That book is always my number one recommendation for people that want to learn to read hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช! I also went to my other favorite section – the Star Wars section! I love reading Star Wars books and I am a huge fan!
There are so many beautiful ๐ค images ๐ ฑ๐๐ ฑ๐ช of the gods ๐น๐น๐น on this mummiform coffin ๐ ฑ๐๐พ! Who are some of the gods ๐น๐น๐น and goddesses ๐น๐น๐น๐ you can see?! Let me know in the comments! This coffin is made of cartonnage, which is a material that is made when linen ๐ฑ or papyrus ๐ฏ๐ mixed with plaster! This is from the Third Intermediate Period, and dates from the 22nd – 25th Dynasties. This mummy case ๐ ฑ๐๐พ belonged to a priest ๐น๐ named Nespanetjerenpere. This large red granite ๐ ๐ณ๐๐ถ statue ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ of Hatshepsut ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช is large and majestic and one of the most beautiful ๐ค๐๐!ย
The most striking aspect of this statue ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ besides the size is the fact that Hatshepsutโs ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช face, which displays feminine features, remained pretty much intact! Many of Hatshepsutโs ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ statues ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ๐ช have the faces destroyed, possibly in an attempt to destroy her image ๐๐ ฑ๐ so she would be forgotten from history.
Hatshepsut ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช is in a kneeling position holding a nemset jar ๐๐บ in each hand ๐ง๐๐บ. In ancient Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐, kneeling is considered a worshipping ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ข/offering ๐ต๐๐ช๐๐๐ฆ position. A pharaoh ๐๐ป only kneels to another god ๐น, who in this case is probably Amun-Ra ๐๐ ๐๐ณ๐บ.
Hatshepsut ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช is depicted wearing the nemes ๐๐ ๐ด head cloth and the false beard which was typical fashion for a pharaoh ๐๐ป!
The hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช on the back of the statue ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ show her throne name, Maatkare ๐ณ๐ฆ๐.

The ram headed pendant on his chest is meant to represent the sun ๐ณ god ๐น Raโs ๐ณ๐บ๐ journey across the sky ๐ช๐๐ฏ during the day ๐๐๐บ๐ณ – and through the netherworld ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ at night ๐ผ๐๐๐. The images ๐ ฑ๐๐ ฑ๐ช of the gods ๐น๐น๐น can almost be thought of as the picture-book version of the Book of the Dead ๐๐๐๐ป๐ ๐๐๐ฒ๐ณ๐บ๐ผ๐บ.
While the images ๐ ฑ๐๐ ฑ๐ช of the gods ๐น๐น๐น are so delicately drawn, the hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช going down the middle of the coffin ๐ ฑ๐๐พ seem to be unfinished and roughly done.
Mummy case of Nespanetjerenpere showing the hieroglyphs and images of the gods.
The hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช show the very standard offering formula:
๐๐๐ต๐ – An Offering the King Gives
๐ฉ๐น – Osiris
๐ – Foremost
๐๐๐๐ – West
The inscription reads: โAn Offering the King Gives Osiris, Foremost of the West.โ

Wooden ๐ฑ๐๐บ Ushabti ๐ท๐ฟ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฎ๐พ of Rameses II ๐ณ๐๐ง๐ณ๐๐ (New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, c. 1292-1190 B.C.E.). These wooden ๐ฑ๐๐บ models were found in the tomb ๐๐ซ๐๐ of the Royal Chief Steward Meketre who lived during the reign ๐พ of Montuhotep II ๐ ๐๐ฟ๐ ฑ๐ต๐๐ช and possibly Amenemhat I ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ which was during the Middle Kingdom.
