Steatite Wedjat Amulets

In relation to my post about the wedjat ๐“‚€ or the “Eye of Horus” from yesterday ๐“‹ด๐“†‘๐“‡ณ, I wanted to talk about these really small ๐“ˆ–๐“†“๐“‹ด๐“…ฉ but cool steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ wedjat ๐“‚€ amulets ๐“Š๐“Šช๐“…†๐“ช! I love how detailed the wedjat ๐“‚€ is!ย It always amazes me how ancient Egyptian craftsman were able to make such small ๐“ˆ–๐“†“๐“‹ด๐“…ฉ objects so detailed and beautiful ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹! It’s even more incredible that they have lasted in such great condition for thousands of years!

These steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ wedjat ๐“‚€ amulets ๐“Š๐“Šช๐“…†๐“ช are very similar to the steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช from the Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“/Thutmosis III ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ era of the 18th Dynasty! They are in the same display case as the steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช at the Metropolitan Museum of Art! Most would miss the fact that these amulets ๐“Š๐“Šช๐“…†๐“ช are not scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช!ย

Steatite Wedjat Amulets
Steatite Wedjat Amulets with Hatshepsut’s throne name Maatkare inscribed on the back

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! This is a simple but great inscription ๐“Ž˜๐“…ฑ๐“Ž– to read! On the back of this amulet ๐“Š๐“Šช๐“…†, Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช throne name, Maatkare ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ is written!

๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ– – Amun

๐“Œป – Beloved

๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ – Maatkare (Truth ๐“ฆ is the Soul ๐“‚“ of Re ๐“‡ณ)

The full inscription ๐“Ž˜๐“…ฑ๐“Ž– reads โ€œBeloved of Amun, Maatkare.โ€

To Be and To Exist

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to look at the Middle Egyptian word for “To Be” and “To Exist.” This simple yet important phrase appears a lot in inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ!

One of the most important phrases you will learn in any language is the verb โ€œto be.โ€ I remember when I first started learning Italian as a small kid, โ€œessereโ€ was one of the first verbs we learned!

To Be and To Exist
To Be and To Exist written in raised relief on the wall of a chapel from the 19th Dynasty currently on display at the MET.

The word โ€œTo Be,โ€ and โ€œTo Existโ€ is written in Middle Egyptian as โ€œ๐“ƒน๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ–,โ€  which is what is shown in the relief pictured. The word can also be commonly written as just โ€œ๐“ƒน๐“ˆ–โ€  or โ€œ๐“ƒนโ€ if spacing becomes an issue! The word would be transliterated as โ€œwnn ๐“ƒน๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ–โ€ or โ€œwn ๐“ƒน๐“ˆ–/๐“ƒน.โ€ It was most likely pronounced the same no matter how many โ€œ๐“ˆ–โ€ appeared or didnโ€™t appear at the end of the word (remember, pronunciation is just inferred).

Letโ€™s break down each of the symbols individually!

The โ€œhare ๐“ƒนโ€ is normally used as a biliteral phonogram. The  ๐“ƒน represents the sounds โ€œwn.โ€

The โ€œripple of water ๐“ˆ–โ€ is a uniliteral phonogram. The โ€œ๐“ˆ–โ€ is associated with the sound of โ€œn!โ€ In this case, the ๐“ˆ– is acting as the phonetic complement, meaning that the sounds are written twice but pronounced once! This is a very common occurrence in Middle Egyptian and is something that you need to just practice and get used to when youโ€™re learning! ย

Doorjamb of Rameses II – Video

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

This large piece is referred to as a โ€œDoorjamb from a Temple of Rameses II.โ€ Basically, that means these blocks came from a gateway at a temple that was built in honor of one of Rameses IIโ€™s ๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ– royal jubilees.

๐“†ฅ – King of Upper and Lower Egypt

๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ– – Usermaatre setep en Ra (Throne Name of Rameses II which translates to โ€œThe Justice of Ra is powerful, Chosen of Ra.โ€)

๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“บ – Amun-Ra

๐“ŽŸ๐“Žผ๐“Žผ๐“Žผ๐“‡ฟ๐“‡ฟ – Lord of the Thrones

๐“Œบ – Beloved

๐“™๐“‹น- Given Life

So all together the inscription reads โ€œKing of Upper and Lower Egypt, Usermaatre, Beloved of Amun-Ra, Lord of the Thrones, Given Life.โ€

Also Rameses IIIโ€™s ๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“ˆ˜๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ– cartouches appear on this too on the bottom of the doorjamb – he clearly usurped this piece for his own use and didnโ€™t change all of the cartouches!

Steatite Scarabs of Hatshepsut (Part II)

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to look at two ๐“ป more steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช from the Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“/Thutmosis III ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ era of the 18th Dynasty! Just like the scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช we looked at yesterday ๐“‹ด๐“†‘๐“‡ณ, these are also on display at the MET!

Steatite Scarabs of Hatshepsut
Steatite Scarabs of Hatshepsut on display at the MET

Alright so letโ€™s get to the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!!!

These two ๐“ป steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช are interesting because while at first glance the inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ look similar (and they are) they are also quite different! On them Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ is referred to as both โ€œLord of the Two Landsโ€ and โ€œLady of the Two Lands.โ€ Her throne name โ€œMaatkare ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“โ€ appears on both scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช.

Letโ€™s look at the scarab ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ on the left!

๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ – Maatkare (Truth ๐“ฆ is the Soul ๐“‚“ of Re ๐“‡ณ)

๐“ŽŸ – Lord

๐“‡ฟ๐“‡ฟ – Two Lands

Letโ€™s look at the scarab ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ on the right!

๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ – Maatkare (Truth ๐“ฆ is the Soul ๐“‚“ of Re ๐“‡ณ)

๐“ŽŸ๐“ – Lady

๐“‡พ๐“‡พ – Two Lands

In order to make nouns feminine in Middle Egyptian, a โ€œ๐“โ€ is added to the end of the word so โ€œLord ๐“ŽŸโ€ becomes โ€œLady ๐“ŽŸ๐“.โ€ This is significant in this case because on these scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช, thereโ€™s a mix of both when it comes to Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“! From the early to mid part of her  reign, Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ statuary contained inscriptions more commonly with the feminine form of the words. Towards the end of her reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ she started using the masculine form of words.

You can also see the two ๐“ป different variants used for โ€œtwo landsโ€ (๐“‡ฟ๐“‡ฟย  vs. ๐“‡พ๐“‡พ )on the scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช! These two ๐“ป variants were pretty much used interchangeably so not much to analyze in this case!ย

Steatite Scarabs of Hatshepsut (Part I)

Here is another example of steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช from the Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“/Thutmosis III ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ era of the 18th Dynasty! These scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช are on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art!

Steatite Scarabs of Hatshepsut
Steatite Scarabs of Hatshepsut

Before we read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช, letโ€™s โ€œreadโ€ the geology! I always tell my students that rocks ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‚‹๐“ˆ™๐“ฆ are the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช of the Earth ๐“‡พ๐“‡พ, and rocks ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‚‹๐“ˆ™๐“ฆ are the language of our planet!

Most scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช from this time period are made of a metamorphic rock ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‚‹๐“ˆ™ called steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ which is also commonly known as soapstone. Simply put, steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ is made when the mineral ๐“‡‹๐“Œป๐“‚‹๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™ talc is exposed to tremendous amounts of heat and pressure at subduction zones (areas where oceanic crust sinks beneath continental crust). Steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ has been used by ancient civilizations all over the world for carving because it is both durable and easy to work with!

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

These scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช contain the shorter variant of Hatshepsutโ€™s birth name cartouche. Hatshepsutโ€™s full name is โ€œ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช United with Amun, Foremost of the Noble Women,โ€ but thatโ€™s not what appears on the scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช because itโ€™s too long! Letโ€™s take a look:

๐“„‚๐“ – Foremost (Hat)

๐“€ผ๐“๐“ช – Noble Women (Shepsut)

So Hatshepsutโ€™s name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– variant on the scarab translates to โ€œForemost of the Noble Women.โ€

The Egyptians were very clever with spacing too – if you look at the scarab ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ at the bottom of the picture, the โ€œ๐“โ€ is shared between the ๐“„‚ and ๐“€ผ glyphs!ย I will forever be impressed by. the ingenuity of the Egyptian artists!

Steatite Scarab Ring

This mounted steatite ๐“…ฎ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“ˆ’๐“ŠŒ scarab ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ ring ๐“‚๐“ˆ–๐“๐“‹ช inscribed with the throne name cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท of the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Thutmosis III ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ is a stunning example of the scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช that were made during this time period. Some Egyptologists state that the scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช made during the Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“/Thutmosis III ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ era were some of the finest ever made, and I happen to agree!ย

Steatite Scarab Ring
Steatite Scarab Ring inscribed with the throne name of pharaoh Thutmosis III

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

The name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– Menkhepperra ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ translates to โ€œLasting is the Manifestation of Ra.โ€ This cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท appears twice on the scarab ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ!

๐“‡ณ – Ra

๐“  – Lasting

๐“†ฃ – Manifestation

The word โ€œEternity ๐“†–โ€ also appears on the Scarab ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ.

In the middle of the scarab ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ there is also the โ€œGold Falcon/Gold Horus ๐“…‰โ€ symbol which shows a falcon ๐“…ƒ standing on the hieroglyphic symbol for โ€œgold ๐“‹ž.โ€ Usually the Gold Falcon ๐“…‰ is one of the five names of the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป and is the third part of the royal titularly. Thutmosis IIIโ€™s Gold Falcon name is โ€œ๐“…‰๐“‚ฆ๐“‚‹๐“›๐“ˆ๐“…ฑ๐“›๐“ฆ Djoser Khauโ€ which translates to โ€œSacred of Appearances.โ€ Obviously this full name does not appear on the Scarab ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ, but the Gold Falcon ๐“…‰ symbolizes kingship ๐“‡“๐“‡Œ.

Alabaster Vase of Thutmosis III

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to take a virtual trip to the Petrie Museum!

This is a calcite ๐“ฑ (alabaster) vase ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡‹๐“‹ with the throne name cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท of pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Thutmosis III ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ on it!ย

Alabaster Vase of Thutmosis III
Alabaster Vase of Thutmosis III

Thutmosis III ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ was one of the longest reigning pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฅ in Egyptian history! He co-ruled with Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช for about 21 ๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“บ years, and then he ruled on his own for another 30 ๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž† years!

This alabaster ๐“ฑ vase ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡‹๐“‹ was found in a foundation deposit. Both the Petrie Museum and the MET have very similar alabaster ๐“ฑ vases ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡‹๐“‹๐“ช with Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– on them! I have done previous posts on the vases with Hatshepsut’s name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– – a translation and a post on foundation deposits!

These vasesย  ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡‹๐“‹๐“ช usually contained incense or ointment.ย Sometimes, traces of the incense or ointment can still be seen within the vase ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡‹๐“‹ which is so cool!

Letโ€™s break down the hieroglyphic ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ symbols!

๐“Šน๐“„ค – Perfect God

๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ – Menkhepperra

๐“‹Š๐“Šพ – Min

๐“Žค๐“ƒ€๐“„ฟ๐“Š– – Koptos

๐“Œธ – Beloved

All ๐“ŽŸ together ๐“ˆ–๐“Š—, the full translation is: โ€œThe Perfect God, Menkhepperra, Beloved of Min of Koptos.โ€

Koptos ๐“Žค๐“ƒ€๐“„ฟ๐“Š– is the Greek name for the ancient Egyptian town of โ€œGbtyw ๐“Žค๐“ƒ€๐“„ฟ๐“Š–,โ€ and the modern Arabic name for the town is Qift. Since the Early Dynastic period, Koptos ๐“Žค๐“ƒ€๐“„ฟ๐“Š– was an important place of worship ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“€ข for the god ๐“Šน Min ๐“‹Š๐“Šพ, but it was also a key trading/economic location due to its proximity to the Red Sea. Koptos ๐“Žค๐“ƒ€๐“„ฟ๐“Š– remained an important town through the Ptolemaic and Roman periods too!

Cleopatra VII’s Cartouche

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!ย Today we are going to take a closer look at Cleopatra VII’s ๐“ˆŽ๐“ƒญ๐“‡‹๐“ฏ๐“Šช๐“„ฟ๐“‚ง๐“‚‹๐“๐“„ฟ๐“†‡ cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท!

Cleopatra VII ๐“ˆŽ๐“ƒญ๐“‡‹๐“ฏ๐“Šช๐“„ฟ๐“‚ง๐“‚‹๐“๐“„ฟ๐“†‡ is arguably one of the most famous pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฆ to ever rule Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– and one of the most famous women in history. Even though Cleopatra VII ๐“ˆŽ๐“ƒญ๐“‡‹๐“ฏ๐“Šช๐“„ฟ๐“‚ง๐“‚‹๐“๐“„ฟ๐“†‡ was Greek, she is considered to be the last pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป of Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š–.ย

Cleopatra VII's Cartouche
Cleopatra VII’s Cartouche on a statue on display at the MET

This picture shows the birth name cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท of Cleopatra VII ๐“ˆŽ๐“ƒญ๐“‡‹๐“ฏ๐“Šช๐“„ฟ๐“‚ง๐“‚‹๐“๐“„ฟ๐“†‡! Since Cleopatra VII ๐“ˆŽ๐“ƒญ๐“‡‹๐“ฏ๐“Šช๐“„ฟ๐“‚ง๐“‚‹๐“๐“„ฟ๐“†‡ was Greek and not native Egyptian, this cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท of hers is very phonetic – most of the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช used are uniliteral signs, which means that they correspond to a single sound, just like a letter in the alphabet.

Letโ€™s take a closer look!

๐“ˆŽ – The โ€œsandy slope ๐“ˆŽโ€ symbol is a uniliteral phonogram associated with the sound โ€œq.โ€

๐“ƒญ – the โ€œrecumbent lion ๐“ƒญโ€ was traditionally a biliteral phonogram for the sound โ€œrw,โ€ however, during the Hellenistic Period it adopted the sound of โ€œL.โ€

๐“‡‹ – The โ€œreed ๐“‡‹โ€ represents the sound of โ€œฤฑอ—,โ€ however it can also function as an ideogram for the word โ€œreed ๐“‡‹๐“บ.โ€

๐“ฏ – The โ€œlasso ๐“ฏโ€ was traditionally a biliteral phonogram for โ€œw3โ€ (wah) but became evolved to adopt the sound of โ€œo.โ€

๐“Šช – The โ€œstool ๐“Šชโ€ is a uniliteral phonogram for the sound โ€œp.โ€

๐“„ฟ – The โ€œEgyptian Vulture ๐“„ฟโ€ represents the sound โ€œ3โ€ which would be pronounced like โ€œah.โ€

๐“‚ง – The โ€œhand ๐“‚งโ€ represents the sound โ€œdโ€ and is also the ideogram for the word โ€œhand.โ€

๐“‚‹ – The โ€œmouth ๐“‚‹โ€ symbol is used to represent the sound โ€œr.โ€ It can also be used as an ideogram for the word โ€œmouth ๐“‚‹๐“บ.โ€

๐“ – The โ€œflat loaf of bread ๐“โ€ is a uniliteral phonogram used to represent the sound โ€œt.โ€ It also functions as the ideogram for the word โ€œbread ๐“๐“บ.โ€

๐“„ฟ – see above!

๐“†‡ – The โ€œegg ๐“†‡โ€ symbol is kind of used as a determinative here?? The โ€œegg ๐“†‡โ€ is usually used this way in the name of the goddess โ€œIsis ๐“Šจ๐“๐“†‡,โ€ who was a very popular deity at the time so there is probably a relation. The โ€œegg ๐“†‡โ€ symbol can adopt different sounds depending on how itโ€™s used.

Itโ€™s pretty cool to see the versatility of the hieroglyphic ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช symbols with examples of foreign names ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–๐“ฆ!

“Given Life”

โ€œGiven Life ๐“™๐“‹นโ€

"Given Life"
“Given Life” in raised relief on display at the MET

Happy 800 ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ posts to @ancientegyptblog (on Instagram)! I honestly canโ€™t believe how much Iโ€™ve written, but whatโ€™s even more unbelievable is how many people have read what Iโ€™ve written!ย I’m not going to lie; I’m so proud!

โ€œGiven Life ๐“™๐“‹นโ€ is such a simple and easy phrase to learn when youโ€™re starting on your hieroglyph ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ journey. While  โ€œGiven Life ๐“™๐“‹นโ€ is a super common phrase to see in inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ, it is also super meaningful in ancient Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– – thatโ€™s why it appeared everywhere! A lot of inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ either started or ended with โ€œGiven Life ๐“™๐“‹น.โ€ Usually, these inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ were meant to preserve the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of the deceased, so their soul ๐“‚“๐“บ could continue to live on.

You all have โ€œGiven Life ๐“™๐“‹นโ€ to not only my posts, but more importantly, to my memories about my Nonno and also his knowledge ๐“‚‹๐“๐“๐“œ that he shared with me. This account started as a memorial for my Nonno, and it always will be. Thank you ๐“‹ด๐“๐“ฏ๐“„ฟ๐“€ข guys!!

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! Letโ€™s break down these two ๐“ป symbols and take a closer look at what they mean:

The โ€œbread mold ๐“™โ€ symbol is functions as a phonogram for โ€œdโ€ or โ€œแธjโ€ and also as โ€œrdjโ€ in the word for โ€œgive.โ€ The most common use for this symbol is as the word โ€œgive.โ€

The โ€œsandal strap ๐“‹นโ€ more commonly known as the โ€œAnkh,โ€ is a triliteral phonogram that has the sound โ€œหnแธซโ€ which would sound like โ€œankh.โ€ While it can also be an ideogram for โ€œsandal strapโ€ and โ€œmirror,โ€ the โ€œsandal strap ๐“‹นโ€ is much more commonly seen as the word for โ€œLife.โ€

Thoth on a Coffin

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช – with the god ๐“Šน of writing ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ himself, Thoth ๐“…๐“๐“ญ! I love Thoth ๐“…because I love hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช and heโ€™s my second favorite Egyptian deity!ย Let’s take a look at a depiction of Thoth on a coffin!

Thoth on a Coffin
Thoth on a Coffin depicted as an Ibis with a human body.

This photo ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ shows some details on the mummiform coffin ๐“…ฑ๐“‡‹๐“€พ of a man named Kharrushere who lived during the Third Intermediate Period/22nd Dynasty (c. 825โ€“712 B.C.E.). Elaborately decorated coffins ๐“…ฑ๐“‡‹๐“€พ๐“ช are very typical of this time period and I love just looking at them and enjoying the beautiful ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹ art!

Thoth ๐“…๐“๐“ญ was represented in multiple ways, and was always associated with either the baboon or the ibis ๐“‰”๐“ƒ€๐“…ค. When in humanoid form (like on this coffin ๐“…ฑ๐“‡‹๐“€พ), he was represented as a human body with the head of an ibis ๐“‰”๐“ƒ€๐“…ค.

Letโ€™s break down the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ that are to the left of Thoth!

๐“†“๐“Œƒ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ– – Words Spoken By

๐“…ค – Thoth (โ€œDjeutyโ€ in Middle Egyptian)

๐“ŽŸ – Lord

๐“Šน๐“Œƒ – Hieroglyphs (โ€œDivine Words/Writingโ€)

Thoth ๐“…ค๐“€ญ was thought to have invented writing ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ, and was thus the god ๐“Šน of all record keeping, hence the epithet โ€œLord of the Divine Words/Writing ๐“ŽŸ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ.โ€ Due to his vast knowledge, ๐“‚‹๐“๐“๐“œ Thoth ๐“Ÿ was thought to know magic ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“„ฟ๐“œ and secrets ๐“ƒ€๐“‹ด๐“†Ÿ๐“›๐“ฆ that were unknown to the rest of the gods ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน in the Egyptian pantheon. He was also the god ๐“Šน of scribes ๐“Ÿ๐“€€๐“ช.
