I have always loved and will always love ushabti ๐ท๐ฟ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฎ๐พ figures!! They are one of my absolute favorite things to see in museums, and that is probably because my Nonno loved ushabtis ๐ท๐ฟ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฎ๐พ๐ช so much! He used to tell my sister and I stories about the ushabtis ๐ท๐ฟ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฎ๐พ๐ช and I became enthralled with them so letโs take a look at this little guy!!
This style of ushabti ๐ท๐ฟ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฎ๐พ is very common in the Third Intermediate Period. The figure is made of blue ๐๐น๐๐ฟ๐ธ๐ฅ faience ๐ฃ๐๐๐ธ๐ผ with details in black ๐๐ paint ๐จ๐๐ ฑ๐ญ๐ธ๐ฆ. Most ushabti ๐ท๐ฟ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฎ๐พ figures contained hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช on them that were part of the โShabti Spell,โ which is taken from chapter 6 of the Book of the Dead. The spell was very formulaic and appears on many different ushabtis ๐ท๐ฟ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฎ๐พ๐ช! Since space is very limited on these small ๐๐๐ด๐ ฉ faience ๐ฃ๐๐๐ธ๐ผ ushabtis ๐ท๐ฟ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฎ๐พ๐ช, this is a very shortened version of the spell!
Letโs read some hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช!
๐ฉ๐น – The Osiris
๐๐
– Nb-Hrw
๐๐ค – Justified (or โTrue of Voiceโ)
All together ๐๐, hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช read: โThe Osiris, Nb-Hrw, Justified.โ
The name ๐๐ of the deceased ๐ ๐๐ฑ, which in this case is โNb-Hrw ๐๐ ,โ will always follow the epithet โThe Osiris ๐ฉ๐น.โ The reason why the deceased ๐ ๐๐ฑ is referred to as โThe Osiris ๐ฉ๐นโ is because the ancient Egyptians wanted to live forever ๐๐ณ๐ in the afterlife/Duat ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐, just like Osiris ๐ฉ๐น! โJustified/True of Voice ๐๐ค,โ meant that the deceased ๐ ๐๐ฑ lived an honest and true life ๐น!
