This very simple and unassuming lid of a canopic jar was found in the tomb ๐๐ซ๐๐ of Senemut ๐ข๐๐ ๐ผ (can also be written without a determinative ๐ข๐๐ ). Senemut ๐ข๐๐ ๐ผ rose to become the most important official ๐ด๐๐ during Hatshepsutโs ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช reign and held over 80 ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ different titles.
Senemut ๐ข๐๐ ๐ผ was referred to as a โHigh Steward ๐๐๐ (literally translated as โarm is in frontโ), which meant he was much more than just an official ๐ด๐๐ in Hatshepsutโs ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช government. In a lot of inscriptions, Senemut is sometimes simply referred to as an overseer ๐๐๐ค, since that seems to summarize his various roles. As the Chief Royal Architect, Senemut ๐ข๐๐ ๐ผ supervised all of Hatshepsutโs ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช building projects, including at least one of her massive obelisks ๐ถ๐ถ๐ถ.
Senemut ๐ข๐๐ ๐ผ was also the tutor for Hatshepsutโs ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช daughter Neferure ๐ณ๐ค๐ค๐ค, which is how he is depicted in statuary ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ a lot of the time. Some other common titles include Steward of Amun, Chief Steward of the King, Overseer of the Treasury, Granary, Fields, Cattle of Amun, a Controller of Works, and so many more! I guess Senemut ๐ข๐๐ ๐ผ was a workaholic!
Back to the canopic jar lid – it is actually debated l if this lid represents Senemut ๐ข๐๐ ๐ผ or not! Based on other statues ๐๐ ฑ๐๐พ๐ช of Senemut ๐ข๐๐ ๐ผ, I personally think that the canopic jar lid is in Senemutโs ๐ข๐๐ ๐ผ likeness, however, that is just my inference/personal opinion. The lid is dated to the joint reign of Hatshepsut ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช and Thutmosis III ๐ณ๐ ๐ฃ (c. 1479โ1458 B.C.E.), however, based on what I have read the actual date this piece was made seems to be debated, even though it was found in Senemutโs ๐ข๐๐ ๐ผ tomb ๐๐ซ๐๐.
