Letโs read some hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช!
This is a coffin ๐ ฑ๐๐พ fragment (Late Period, Dynasties 26-31 c. 664-332 B.C.E.) that shows the goddess ๐น๐ Isis ๐จ๐๐๐ in mourning. Since in Egyptian mythology Isis ๐จ๐๐ฅ assisted in the resurrection of Osiris ๐น๐จ๐ญ, it was believed that she would be instrumental in the rebirth ๐๐ฟ๐ ฑ of the deceased ๐ ๐๐ฑ which is why she was always seen on coffins ๐ ฑ๐๐พ๐ช or the on the foot panel of sarcophagi ๐๐น๐๐๐ญ๐ฆ.ย This coffin ๐ ฑ๐๐พ๐ช fragment of Isis ๐จ๐๐ฅ is breathtaking in person!

Itโs usually easy to tell when Isis ๐จ๐๐๐ is being depicted in Egyptian art because she is wearing the same hieroglyphic symbol on her head that appears in her name ๐๐, which is the throne symbol ๐จ!! Isis ๐จ๐๐๐ is shown wearing a white outfit, a broad collar ๐ ฑ๐ด๐๐บ๐ and two ๐ป green ๐ ๐ฟ๐๐ bracelets ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ช which seem to blend in to her green ๐ ๐ฟ๐๐ skin. The green ๐ ๐ฟ๐๐ skin symbolizes life ๐น and rebirth ๐๐ฟ๐ ฑ.ย

This is the inscription ๐๐ ฑ๐ in the right column: โ๐๐๐๐จ๐๐๐๐ จ๐๐น๐ โ
๐๐๐ – Words Spoken By
๐จ๐๐๐ Isis (Isis is more commonly written like this โ๐จ๐๐ฅโ or โ ๐จ๐๐๐ฅโ)
๐ จ๐ – the Great (greatness)
๐น – God
๐ – Mother
Put together ๐๐, the inscription ๐๐ ฑ๐ reads: โWords spoken by Isis, the great Godโs Mother…โ The rest of the inscription ๐๐ ฑ๐ on this column is cut off.
On the left column, the inscription ๐๐ ฑ๐ starts of with โ๐น๐โ which translates to โborn ofโ and then it says the name ๐๐of a person which is hard for me to translate because I canโt tell what bird symbol is being used! The last part of the inscription ๐๐ ฑ๐ seems to say โtrue of voice ๐๐ค,โ but again itโs hard to tell because itโs cut off!
When I saw this piece I really liked it because of how colorful it was! No matter how many times I see artifacts in museums, Iโm always shocked by how bright the colors still are on some objects!
