Ptolemaic Statue of Anubis

This statueΒ π“„šπ“ˆ–π“π“π“€ΎΒ of AnubisΒ π“‡‹π“ˆ–π“Šͺ𓅱𓃣 is dated to the Ptolemaic Period (c.Β 332–30 B.C.E.) and is quite beautiful π“„€ in person! I have never posted about this piece before because the lighting in the gallery is so bad that it makes it hard to get a good picture 𓏏𓅱𓏏!Β

This statue π“„šπ“ˆ–π“π“π“€Ύ is made of plaster and wood 𓆱𓏏𓏺, and has been painted π“žπ“œ in many beautiful π“„€ colors! Anubis’ π“‡‹π“ˆ–π“Šͺ𓅱𓃣 arms are raised in a protective π“…“π“‚π“Ž‘π“€œ stance, as if he is welcoming the dead π“…“𓏏𓏱 to the afterlife π“‡Όπ“„Ώπ“π“‰.

Anubis π“‡‹π“ˆ–π“Šͺ𓅱𓃣 held many important titles, all of which signify how important he was to not only embalming, but to all aspects of a person’s death π“…“𓏏𓏱. The title β€œUpon His Hill/Mountain π“Άπ“Ίπ“ˆ‹π“†‘β€ references the cliff that usually surrounded necropolises, which Anubis π“‡‹π“ˆ–π“Šͺ𓅱𓃣 (and jackals π“Šƒπ“„Ώπ“ƒ€π“ƒ₯𓏦) would guard. The title β€œHe who is in the mummy wrappings π“‡‹π“Άπ“…±π“π“Žπ“Š–β€œ signifies Anubis’ role in the mummification process, which is what he is most known for.

The title β€œIn front at the God’s booth π“…π“ŠΉπ“‰±β€ references Anubisβ€™Β π“‡‹π“ˆ–π“Šͺ𓅱𓃣 place not only in the place of embalming, but in the burial chamberΒ π“„šπ“ˆ–π“π“‰Β of a tombΒ π“‡‹π“«π“Šƒπ“‰Β too! Β Before OsirisΒ π“Ήπ“Š¨π“€Β became a much more major god π“ŠΉ of the dead 𓅓𓏏𓏱, AnubisΒ π“‡‹π“ˆ–π“Šͺ𓅱𓃣 had that role and was known by the title β€œForemost of the Westerners π“…π“ˆ–π“π“π“‹€π“„Ώπ“¦Β β€ Since the sun 𓆄𓅱𓇳 set in the westΒ π“‹€π“π“π“ˆŠ, the westΒ π“‹€π“π“π“ˆŠΒ was known as the land of the dead to the ancient EgyptiansΒ π“†Žπ“π“€€π“π“ͺ.Β
