TodayΒ ππππ³Β we are going to be looking at this vibrant/beautifully π€ paintedΒ π¨ππ ±ππΈπ¦Β sarcophagusΒ ππΉπππΒ from the MET!Β
This image ππ ±π depicts the deceasedβsΒ π ππ±Β ba π ‘πΊ returning to its mummyΒ ππΉπ ±πΎ! The BaΒ π ‘πΊΒ was part of an individual’s soul that was depicted as a human headed bird. The BaΒ π ‘πΊ and the ka ππΊ Β were both aspects of a personβs soul! I also love the detail of the four π½ canopic jars underneath the mummyΒ ππΉπ ±πΎ!Β
The Ba π ‘π€ is the impression that an individual makes on others – everything except the physical body πππΌ. The Ba π ‘π€ can also be thought of as an individualβs personality. The Ba π ‘π€ wasnβt necessarily associated with living, and seemed to manifest after the person died. Ba π ‘π€ has no equivalent word ππ§π ±π in any current language ππΊ, as this was an ancient Egyptian funerary concept/belief.
When a person died, the Ba π ‘π€ was the only part of the person that would be able to travel out of the tomb ππ«ππ, but it did have to return eventually to be reunited with the mummy ππΉπ ±πΎ.
Thereβs a spell πππ from the Book of the Dead that states βMay it (Ba) see my corpse, may it rest on my mummy, Which will never be destroyed or perish.β This spell πππ illustrates why it was so important that the mummy ππΉπ ±πΎ remain intact; the Ba π ‘π€ needed to return to it! This is why funerary masks became so popular; if the mummy ππΉπ ±πΎ was destroyed, the mask could take the place of the mummyβs head and allow the Ba π ‘π€ to return.
Can you recognize any words in the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ on the sarcophagus ππΉπππ?! Thereβs a bunch we have learned:
ππππ – Words Spoken By
πΉπ¨πΉ – Osiris
π – Lord
πππͺπ – Hapi
ππ΄πΊ – Revered
