Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
TodayΒ ππππ³ we are going to be looking at the name ππ of not only a very popular deity πΉ, but also one of my favorite deities πΉπΉπΉ (besides AnubisΒ πππͺπ ±π£Β of course)!!Β
This is the name ππ of the god πΉ Thoth π ππ in hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! The name ππ Thoth π ππ is actually the Greek version of his name ππ; the ancient Egyptians referred to him as Djehuty π ππ!
Letβs break down the hieroglyphic symbols πΉππͺ together ππ!
The β Ibis on Standard π β symbol is a variant of the βIbis π β symbol and has the sound of βαΈαΈ₯wtj,β which we thing would sound like βDjehuty.β This symbol is an ideogram, so it represents the full sound of the word it is meant to represent.
Whatβs interesting about the Middle Egyptian Language, is that even though ideograms like βπ β and βπβ would fully spell out Thothβs name ππ, scribes would still add the phonograms to the end of the name ππ if there was enough space on the monument/object to do so! This made inscriptions πππ₯ easier to read ππ§π and also look nicer! The ancient Egyptians πππππͺ were all about the aesthetic!
The βflat loaf of bread πβ is a uniliteral phonogram used to represent the sound βt.β It also functions as the ideogram for the word βbread ππΊβ and can be used to make words feminine!
The βtwo strokes πβ symbol represents the sound βjβ which in English would have the same sound as a βy.β It is usually only used at the end of a word!
Here are some variants of Thothβs name ππ:

Thoth π €π was thought to have invented writing πππ₯, and was thus the god πΉ of all record keeping. Due to his vast knowledge,Β ππππΒ Thoth π was thought to know magic and secrets that were unknown to the rest of the gods πΉπΉπΉ in the Egyptian pantheon.Β He was also the god πΉ of scribes πππͺ.
Letβs read the inscriptionΒ ππ ±π in the picture above:Β
π ππ – Thoth (Djehuty)
π – Lord
πΉπππππ – Divine Words/Writing
βLord of the Divine Words/Writing ππΉπππππβ was one of Thothβs π ππ many titles! This title makes perfect sense since he was thought to have invented writing πππ₯/hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! Fun Fact: βwritingβ was usually written as βππππ,β but on this coffin it is switched to βππππ!β
Thoth π ππ was originally god πΉ of the moon ππππΉ, but then later became associated with writing πππ₯ and knowledge ππππ. The moon ππππΉ could be thought of as a βnight sun,β which kind of places him as an opposite of the sun π³πΊ god πΉ Re π³πΊπ.
Thoth π €π is also credited with inventing the 365-day calendar which is one of the ancient Egyptiansβ long lasting contributions to astronomy! As their math an astronomy got better, Egyptian astronomers even adjusted the year to be exactly 365.25 days, which is the exact time it takes the Earth πΎπΎ to revolve around the Sun π³πΊ! How amazing is that!?
