My Nonno took this picture!! This is a statue of the Pharaoh Horemheb ππ ππΊπΏπππ± with the god πΉ Amun ππ π. Amun ππ π is pictured as larger than the pharaoh ππ». The gods πΉπΉπΉ were always depicted bigger to symbolize the fact that they were more important than the pharaoh ππ». The only being a pharaoh ππ» ever bowed to was a god, since the pharaohs themselves were gods πΉπΉπΉ on Earth.
Amun ππ π was the King of the Gods (kind of like Zeus). As early as the 11th Dynasty, Amun ππ π was the patron god πΉ of Thebes. At the start of the 18th Dynasty, the god πΉ Amun ππ π gained great national importance in the pantheon and this is illustrated with Amunβs fusion with the sun god Ra (Amun-Ra ππ ππΊπ³).
Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!Β
On the left side of the statue, the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ read: π€πΉ ππΏπΏ(π³π¦π£πΌπ³ππ)ππ ππΊπ³ π»πππΉ – this translates to: βThe great god, lord of the two lands, Djeser Kheperu Re, beloved of Amun-Ra, given life.β
While on the right side, the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ read: π π³ πππ₯(ππ ππΊπΏπππ±) ππ ππΊπ³ π»πππΉ -this translates to: βSon of Ra, lord of appearances, Horemheb, beloved of Amun-Ra, given life.β
