Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!Β
This inscription πππ₯ is very simple because it contains the shortened variant of both of the words!
πΊ – Beloved (π»ππ)
π§ – Maβat (ππ΄π£ππ§)
I havenβt spoken about Maat ππ΄π£ππ§ in a while, so letβs learn a bit more about her! So why would a pharaoh ππ» want to be the βBeloved of Maat πΊπ§?β
Maat ππ΄π£ππ§, the goddess πΉπ of truth ππ΄π£ππ, justice ππ΄π£πππ, harmony and was an extremely important goddess πΉπ in the Egyptian pantheon.
Maat ππ΄π£ππ§ was not only a goddess πΉπ but also a concept in ancient Egypt ππ ππ – to live πΉ by Maβat ππ΄π£ππ§ was to always act truthfully and with good intentions, as opposed to chaotically – which is how the ancient Egyptians viewed other societies at the time. The goddess Maat ππ΄π£ππ§ was the personification of these concepts and of cosmic order.
Being a βBeloved of Maat πΊπ§β was the pharaoh ππ» taking the place of Maat ππ΄π£ππ§ in the creation myth. When Ra π³πΊπ emerged from the primeval mound, he set his daughter π π Maat ππ΄π£ππ§ in the place of chaos and to keep cosmic order. One of the roles of the pharaoh ππ» was to do the same.
Maat ππ΄π£ππ§ is always portrayed as having a feather ππΊ on her head, whether in reliefs or even in hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! You can always tell that an image ππ ±π is of Maat ππ΄π£ππ§ by looking for the feather ππΊ!
Maatβs ππ΄π£ππ§ most important role was in the judgement of the dead π ππ±. The god πΉ Anubis πππͺπ ±π’ would weigh the heart πππ£ of the deceased against Maatβs ππ΄π£ππ¦ feather π to see if they lived a true ππ΄π£ππ and just life πΉ. If the deceasedβs heart πππ£ was balanced with the feather π, they were declared βtrue of voice ππ€,β and could meet Osiris πΉπ¨π.
Also, notice the similarities between all of these words that have to do with Maat – the determinatives are different, which changed the meaning of the word, but they would have been pronounced the same!
ππ΄π£ππ – Truth
ππ΄π£πππ – Justice
ππ΄π£ππ§ – Maat
