Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
Today ππππ³ we are going to look at a very popular word that appears a lot in ancient Egyptian writing πππ₯! The word βπ€ππ/π€πππβ translates to βbeautiful,β βperfect,β or βgoodβ and can be used not only in titles such as βπΉπ€ Perfect Godβ or names πππ¦ such as βNefertiti π€π€π€π€π€ππππ³π€πππ»π,β but also in various words or phrases too!
In Middle Egyptian there are a couple of ways to write βbeautiful,β βperfect,β or βgood:β
π€ – the hieroglyphic symbol βnfrβ (nefer) can be used on its own to represent the word.
π€ππ – this would also be pronounced as βnfrβ (nefer) as the sounds by the uniliteral phonograms would not be repeated.
π€πππ – this would be pronounced as βnfrt,β (neferet) as this is the female form of the word! This is the one that is in my picture!
When determinatives are used, the meaning of this word can change so be careful! βπ€ππππβ with the woman determinative means βbeautiful womanβ while βπ€ππππβ with the cow determinative means cow! Determinatives can totally change the meaning of the word!
Letβs break down the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! Since the horned viper π is pointing to the right, we will start reading from the right!
The βheart and windpipe π€β symbol is a triliteral phonogram that represents the sound βnfrβ which in modern times we pronounce like βnefer.β
The βhorned viper πβ functions as a uniliteral phonogram and represents the sound βf.β In other words, it can function as a determinative. As a stand-alone symbol, it can also mean he/his.
The β mouth – πβ is a uniliteral phonogram for the sound βrβ and can be an ideogram for the word βmouth ππΊ.β
The βflat loaf of bread πβ is a uniliteral phonogram used to represent the sound βt.β It also functions as the ideogram for the word βbread ππΊβ and can be used to make words feminine!
