Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
Yesterday π΄ππ³ we looked at one word for βEternity ππ³πβ and today ππππ³ we are going to look at the other word for βEternity – π.β
βTimeβ is such a complex concept; in our modern view, time is linear with the past at one end and the future at the other end. The present time is viewed as in between the past and future. In ancient Egypt ππ ππ, time was viewed as both linear and cyclical.
Hereβs how βeternityβ was expressed in hieroglyphs πΉππͺ:
π – Eternity (linear)
ππ³π – Eternity (cyclical)

Linear eternity, represented by π, is the concept which represents that all of the things that came about at the time of creation (sky πͺππ― is above the land πΎπΎ, Nile ππππ ±ππππΊ flowing South ππ ±π to North ππ, sun π³πΊ rising in the East ππππ and setting in the West ππππ, etc) would continue on as is for all π eternity π. Cyclical Eternity ππ³π, showed that all of the natural cycles like birth and death, the yearly seasons, would continue on for all π eternity ππ³π.
Letβs break down the symbols for Eternity π (pronounced like βαΈtβ):
The βcobra πβ is a phonogram, which means that it is a symbol that represents sounds, and is usually part of a larger word! The cobra π is a uniliteral sign, so it represents just one consonant. It represents the sound βαΈβ which would almost sound like a βjβ when pronounced.
The βflat loaf of bread πβ is a uniliteral phonogram used to represent the sound βt.β It also functions as the ideogram for the word βbread ππΊ.β
The βstrip of land πΏ/πΎβ symbols can both be used to write βEternity π.β While both symbols have different meaning when not used as a determinative, in the case of βEternity πβ it is used as one! βπΎβ pronounced like βtah/t3β is an ideogram for land, earth and world and is a determining for βEternity π.β βπΏβ is also a determinative for βEternity πβ but also for desert and foreign land. Itβs an ideogram for βislandβ and would be pronounced like βjw.β
