This is a mummy mask π ±ππΎ of a woman πππππ from the Roman Period of Egypt ππ ππ. The Roman Period of Egypt is characterized as being after the death π ππ± of Cleopatra VII ππππ―πͺπΏπ§πππΏπ, the last pharaoh ππ», in 31 B.C.E. Even though Cleopatra VII ππππ―πͺπΏπ§πππΏπ was Greek, she is considered to be the last pharaoh ππ» of Egypt ππ ππ. Augustus, though he called himself βPharaoh ππ»πβ was the first Emperor of the Roman Empire.Β
My Nonno loved the Roman Period of Egypt ππ ππ because he loved Roman history too, so Roman Egypt was the combination of his favorite things! The merging of the civilizations also meant the merging of both Egyptian and Roman art styles, as is demonstrated by this mask. The mask is made of cartonnage and mostly overlaid with gold ππππ leaf. The eyes πΉππ¦ are inlaid with glass π£πππΈπΌ, while the garland π΄πΏππ° of flowers πΌπ ±π°π¦ is painted.Β
My favorite detail on this mummy mask π ±ππΎ are the snake πππππ bracelets ππ πππππ¦ that are carved in raised relief on the arms ππ¦. I love snake πππππ themed jewelry and wear snake πππππ rings ππππͺπ₯ and bracelets ππ πππππ¦ myself! I think it is such a beautiful π€ detail on the mask π ±ππΎ! The woman πππππ who owned this mask was most likely extremely wealthy because most mummy masks π ±ππΎπͺ were not completely overlaid with gold ππππ leaf such as this one.
The eyebrows on the mask are blue ππΉππΏπΈπ₯ because it is supposed to be the same color as lapis lazuli ππ΄ππ§π§! Many of the gods πΉπΉπΉ and goddesses πΉπΉπΉπ were thought to have blue ππΉππΏπΈπ₯ lapis lazuli ππ΄ππ§π§ hair! The blue ππΉππΏπΈπ₯ eyebrows could represent this woman joining the gods πΉπΉπΉ in the afterlife πΌπΏππ.
