There are two π» things that completely fascinate me: ancient Egyptian history and geology so these “inscribed stones” are so interesting to me! I love when I can combine my passion for these two π» subjects! Rocks πππππ₯ are basically the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ of the Earth πΎπΎ! Whatβs even better is when hieroglyphs πΉππͺ appear on pieces/fragments of rock ππππ – itβs like hieroglyph πΉπ inception!Β
The MET has these listed as βinscribed stones,β which were most likely intentionally put at the base of Hatshepsutβs ππ ππΉππππΌπͺ Valley Temple as offerings π΅ππͺπππ¦. Three πΌ different types or rocks are shown in the picture ππ ±π above: limestone ππππ, sandstone ππ ±π§πππ and quartzite. All three πΌ of these rocks πππππ₯ are found in abundance across Egypt ππ ππ, especially the sandstone ππ ±π§πππ and limestone ππππ!Β
While many of these βinscribed stonesβ have very rough carvings on them, the cartouche π πππ· that appears in the picture ππ ±π above on the limestone ππππ rock ππππ is quite beautiful π€ππ! The version of Hatshepsutβs ππ ππΉππππΌπͺ name ππ that appears on these fragments of rock ππππ is her throne name, which is the name she took when she became pharaoh ππ»! Her throne name is βMaatkare π³π¦πβ which translates to βTruth is the Soul of Re.βΒ
Letβs take a closer look at what the symbols in her name mean:
π³ – Ra
π¦ – Maat (Truth)
π – Ka (Soul)
