This is a sandstone ππ ±π§πππ Sphinx ππ ±ππ€ of Amenhotep II ππ ππ΅ππͺ! Amenhotep II ππ ππ΅ππͺ was pharaoh ππ»π₯ during the 18th Dynasty and was the son π of Thutmosis III π³π π£. He ruled πΎππ Egypt ππ ππ for about 26 πππΏ years and the first two π» years of his rule might have been a co-reign with his father πππ.Β
Why do so many pharaohs ππ»π₯ represent themselves as sphinxes ππ ±ππ¦? A sphinx ππ ±ππ€ is a mythical creature and is the combination of a lion π³πΉπΏπ (the body) and a human (the head πΆπΊ). In ancient Egypt ππ ππ, lions π³πΉπΏππͺ have been associated with kingship ππ since prehistoric times due to their strength π and ferocity. The sphinx ππ ±π was the perfect representation of the strength π of the pharaoh ππ» due to its lion π³πΉπΏπ body, while the face still preserved the image ππ ±π of the king π himself.
Sphinxes ππ ±ππ¦ are incredibly powerful creatures because not only do they represent the physical strength ππππ of a lion π³πΉπΏπ, but also the power of a pharaoh ππ».
Amenhotep II ππ ππ΅ππͺ loved to portray himself as powerful (as all pharaohs ππ»π₯ did), but Amenhotep II ππ ππ΅ππͺ is actually most known for his athletic abilities! Many depictions show him as an accomplished archer!
Amenhotep IIβs birth name is actually the same as Amenhotep I, which is ππ ππ΅ππͺ. Letβs break down the meaning of the name:
ππ π – Amun
π΅ππͺ – Satisfied
So the name translates to βAmun is Satisfied.β
We can tell pharaohs ππ»π₯ with the same name apart based on their throne name! Amenhotep IIβs throne name is βAakheperura π³π»π£π¦!β Letβs break down the meaning of the name:
π³ – Ra
π» – Great
π£π¦ – Manifestations
The name translates to βThe Great Manifestations of Ra.βΒ
