The Book of the Dead ππππ»π πππ²π³πΊπΌπΊ of Hunefer ππ ±π€π½ is my favorite version of the Book of the Dead ππππ»π πππ²π³πΊπΌπΊ due to the incredibly detailed drawings and beautiful script π€ππ. It was a dream come true to see it in person at the British Museum!
The text was clearly written by an expert scribe ππ, and since Hunefer ππ ±π€π½ was a scribe ππ, was it possible that he wrote his own Book of the Dead?
The script in Huneferβs ππ ±π€π½ Book of the Dead ππππ»π πππ²π³πΊπΌπΊ is known as βCursive Hieroglyphsβ or βHieroglyphic Book Handβ and I can read it because itβs not in Hieratic like a lot of papyri π ππππ¦ are!Β
The βWeighing of the Heart,β or the βJudgement of Osiris πΉπ¨πβ is my favorite part! In this scene, Huneferβs ππ ±π€π½ heart πππ£ is being weighed against Maatβs ππ΄π£ππ¦ feather ππΊ by Anubis πππͺπ ±π£. If Anubis πππͺπ ±π£ determines thereβs balance between the two, then Hunefer ππ ±π€π½ would be presented to Osiris πΉπ¨ π by Horus π π. Thoth π €π records the findings.
In ancient Egypt ππ ππ, the Book of the Dead was actually referred to as the βBook of Coming Forth by Dayβ which is what the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ βππππ»π πππ²π³πΊπΌπΊβ translate to!
Letβs take a closer look:
ππππ» – Coming Forth
π – By
πππ²π³πΊ – Day
πΌπΊ – Determinative for papyrus scroll (which is where βbookβ comes from)Β
In its simplest form, The Book of the Dead is a collection of magic spells ππππ¦ to help the deceased enter the Duat πΌπΏππ, and eventually the Field of Reeds πππ ππΏππ ±π°π.Β
The Book of the Dead ππππ»π πππ²π³πΊπΌπΊ of Hunefer ππ ±π€π½ is dated to the 19th Dynasty.
