There are a couple of things I always look for when I go to a museum and the blue π ππ faience π£πππΈπΌ hippos πππ―π¦ are one of them! The little hedgehogs ππππππͺ in this display are a nice plus too because they are so cute!Β
The the blue π ππ faience π£πππΈπΌ hippo πππ―π¦ was made between the 12th and 17th Dynasties. In Egypt ππ ππ, hippos πππ―π¦ were both feared and respected πππ . They were feared because they were one of the most dangerous animals in the Nile Valley π. However, hippos πππ―π¦ were also thought to be powerful protectors π ππ‘π against evil πππππ ¨! William has lotus flowers πΈπͺ painted all over him to associate it with rejuvenation! William is most likely painted blue π ππ to represent the Nile ππππ ±ππππΊ and rebirth ππΏπ ±.
In ancient Egypt ππ ππ, the hedgehog πππππ was associated with rebirth ππΏπ ±, which is a concept central to the ancient Egyptian religion. This association occurred because when food π¬ππ ±ππ₯ is scarce, hedgehogs ππππππͺ will retreat into their underground burrows for long periods of time. Hedgehogs ππππππͺ only re-emerge from their burrows during times of food π¬ππ ±ππ₯ abundance. This disappearing/appearing pattern strongly correlated with the concept of rebirth ππΏπ ± to the ancient Egyptians.
The hedgehogs ππππππͺ in this display are made out of blue π ππ faience π£πππΈπΌ just like the hippopotamus πππ―!
