This is a large sandstone stela ππ ±ππΈ of Rameses II ππ πππ³πΊππ΄π on display at the Brooklyn Museum.Β Β
The hieroglyphs πΉππͺ talk about how Rameses II ππ πππ³πΊππ΄π founded the town of Meriamun, and how he established the cult of Amun ππ π there. The stela ππ ±ππΈ was a way to commemorate Rameses II ππ πππ³πΊππ΄π presenting statues ππ ±ππΎπͺ to the temple πππ of Amun-Ra ππ ππΊπ³.
The image ππ ±π shows (from left to right) Mut ππΏπ, Amun ππ π, and Rameses II ππ πππ³πΊππ΄π. Rameses II can be seen wearing the blue crown, also known as the khepresh π£πππ crown which was very popular among New Kingdom pharaohs ππ»!
Rameses II ππ πππ³πΊππ΄π is receiving symbols of kingship (the crook πΎ) from the god πΉ Amun-Ra ππ ππΊπ³. This is meant to represent that Amun-Ra ππ ππΊπ³ saw Rameses II ππ πππ³πΊππ΄π as a legitimate and rightful ruler! The pharaohs ππ» believed that they were direct descendants of Amun-Ra ππ ππΊπ³ (in the 18th – 19th Dynasties Amun ππ π/Amun-Ra ππ ππΊπ³ kind of replaces Horus π π in popularity as king π of the gods πΉπΉπΉ) and that they were gods πΉπΉπΉ on Earth.Β
It was also really cool that five πΎ of Rameses IIβs ππ πππ³πΊππ΄π names πππ¦ appear on this stela ππ ±ππΈ!Β These names appear on the top two rows of the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
Here are Rameses IIβs ππ πππ³πΊππ΄π five πΎ names πππ¦:Β
ππ‘π³πΊππΈπ – Horus π Name (The Strong Bull, Beloved of Ra)
π π‘ππππ ±πππ²π‘πππ¦ – Nebty π Name (Protector of Egypt Who Curbs Foreign Landsβ)
πππ‘ππ§ππ‘ππππ» – Golden Horus π Name (βPowerful of Arm, He Who Has Subdued the Nine Bowsβ)
π³ππ§π³ππ – Throne Name (βThe Justice of Ra is powerful, Chosen of Raβ)
π©ππππ΄π – Birth Name (βRa has fashioned him, beloved of Amunβ)
