Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
This wooden π±ππΊ mummiform coffin π ±ππΎ belonged to a man named Amenemopet who lived during the early part of the 22nd Dynasty (c. 975β909 B.C.E.).Β This coffin π ±ππΎ has what I like to call “The Osiris Cartouche” painted inside!
If you look closely at the beautiful π€ππ artwork inside this mummiform coffin π ±ππΎ thereβs a lot of different things going on! The uppermost row of artwork in the picture ππ ±π shows Anubis πππͺπ ±π£ purifying π΄ππ the deceased π ππ±, whose is surrounded by offering tables πππ ‘πΏπ covered in food π¬ππ ±ππ₯!
Above Anubis πππͺπ ±π£ there are some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ:
π β Lord
π½ – Duat (the ancient Egyptian word for βNetherworldβ)
Is it Anubis πππͺπ ±π£ being referred to as the βLord of the Duat,β or is it Osiris πΉπ¨π? Usually this epithet was used with Osiris πΉπ¨π!
One of the cool things you can see on the bottom panel is Osirisβ πΉπ¨π name ππ in a cartouche π πππ·! Usually the name ππ of a pharaoh ππ» appears in a cartouche π πππ·! While this doesnβt happen often, there are instances where the name ππ of a god πΉ will appear in the cartouche π πππ· and since this coffin does not belong to a pharaoh, a cartouche π πππ· is not expected! But Osiris πΉπ¨π was believed to be the first pharaoh ππ» of Egypt ππ ππ, so I guess a cartouche π πππ· is fitting!
The hieroglyphs πΉππͺ are: πΉπ¨ππππ³π. Letβs break down the symbols!
πΉπ¨π β Osiris
π β Lord
ππ³π β Eternity
All π together ππ, this translates to βOsiris, Lord of Eternity.β
The cartouche is flanked by the Golden Horus symbol π on either side which is a Falcon π standing on top of the symbol for gold π. The common symbols of protection, the Eye of Horus and Eye of Ra also appear above the Golden Horus π , along with the shen ring in between the Falconβs wings. The Shen πΆ symbol is a circle of rope that is tied at the end. The tied rope symbolizes completeness and eternity ππ³π.
