Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
Today ππππ³, we are going to be looking at another popular hieroglyph πΉπ! This is the βsedge πβ Hieroglyph, which has multiple uses and one you have definitely seen in inscriptions before!
The π can function as a biliteral phonogram and represents the sound of βsw.β The sedge π is also the symbol to represent Upper Egypt!
The π symbol can also function as an ideogram for both the words βking (nswt)β and βsedge (swt).β This is the most popular way that the symbol is used in Middle Egyptian!
Letβs take a look at some examples of how π can be used in words!
π – King
ππππ – King
ππππ² – King
ππππ/πππππ – To Be King
ππ – Kingship
ππππ Kingβs Wife
ππππ – Kingβs Acquaintance (literally βKingβs π Knowledge πππ(π)β)
ππΉπͺ – King of the Gods (epithet of Amun ππ π)
Now, letβs take a look at some examples of how π can be used in popular phrases:
π₯ – He of the Sedge and the Bee / King of Upper and Lower Egypt
πππ΅π – An Offering the King Gives (π – King, ππ΅- Offering, π – Gives)
As you can see, the sedge π hieroglyph has many uses, and they mostly have to do with the word βking!β So if you see the π, in most cases youβre going to be dealing with something to do with the king ππππ²/pharaoh ππ»!Β
I have provided different examples of what the βsedge πβ symbol can look like in different forms of hieroglyphic writing! Across all different mediums, the βsedge πβ hieroglyph definitely maintains its form which allows it to be a very easily recognized symbol!
