Letβs read some Hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! Today ππππ³, we are going to be looking at the significance of the βwest ππππ.βΒ
The sun π³πΊ rising in the east ππππ and setting in the west ππππ is a natural phenomenon that has occurred since the Earth formed over 4.5 billion years ago. The illusion of the sun π³πΊ rising and setting is caused by the Earth rotating on its axis, and this motion causes us to have night πΌπππ and day πππΊπ³.
The ancient Egyptians observed this phenomenon and not only developed the concept of the 24 hour day, but centered one of the biggest parts of their religion around it! Since the sun sets in the west πΏπππ, the west πππ was determined to be the land of the dead. Itβs no coincidence that tombs ππ«πππͺ are located on the western ππππ banks of the Nile River ππππ ±ππππΊ!
Here are some of the popular ways to write βwestβ in hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! These are only three of the popular variants, but there are many others!
ππππ
πππ
πΏπππ
Letβs break down the symbols!
The βfeather on a standard π/πΏβ symbols are actually variants of each other and function the same way in inscriptions! This is an ideogram for the word βwestβ and is associated with the sound βjmnt.β
The βflat loaf of bread πβ is a uniliteral phonogram used to represent the sound βt.β
The βmountain range πβ symbol is both an ideogram and a determinative. It is associated with the sound βαΈ«3stβ and means βdesert cliffsβ or βforeign land.β
So whichever way you write βwest ππππ, πππ, πΏπππ,β it would be pronounced as βjmntβ and any extra βπβ symbols function as a phonetic complement!
