Letβs read some Hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! These hieroglyphs πΉππͺ pictured spell out the name of the god βShu ππ ±.β
Shu ππ ±π was the god πΉ of the air and atmosphere. In the Egyptian creation myth, Shu ππ ±π raised the atmosphere from the Earthβs πΎπΎ surface, separating the two π».Β
Shu ππ ± is usually depicted as a man standing or kneeling with both of his arms raised (like this hieroglyphic symbol – π). His arms are in this position to show that he is holding up the air/atmosphere above the ground! Shu ππ ±π was often worshipped πΌπΏπ’ by sailors, who were looking for favorable winds ππ¬ππ ±π‘π¦!Β
Here are the two most common ways to write βShuβ in hieroglyphs:
ππ ±
ππ ±π
Letβs break down each of the symbols!
The βfeather πβ is a biliteral symbol and is representative of the sound Ε‘w. βπβ can also function as an ideogram for βfeather ππΊ,β and as a determinative for βMaat ππ΄π£ππ.β So the βfeather πβ symbol has many different uses!
The βQuail Chick π ±β is a super popular symbol! It is a uniliteral phonogram that is representative of the sound w/u, and it is also an ideogram for the word βchick π ±πΊ.β It mostly appears as a uniliteral phonogram and is one of the hieroglyphs that appears the most in inscription!
The βseated god πβ is a determinative symbol and isnβt pronounced! It acts as βpunctuationβ at the end of the name of a male god!
Here are some other words that are similar to Shu ππ ± – they are pronounced the same, but have different determinatives which changes the meaning of the word! What is so cool about these words is that they are related to the atmosphere/sky!
ππ ±π ¨ – Empty
ππ ±π³, ππ ±πΆ – sun, sunlight
Iβm fascinated by the fact that both βempty ππ ±π ¨β and βShu ππ ±β are pronounced the same because we canβt see the atmosphere so what is above/all around us appears to be empty ππ ±π ¨ but itβs not and the ancient Egyptians knew that!Β
