Letโs read some Hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช!ย Today ๐๐๐๐ณ we are going to learn about the god ๐น โGeb ๐ ฌ๐๐ญ!”
These hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช pictured below spell out the name ๐๐ of the god ๐น โGeb ๐ ฌ๐๐ญ.โ Geb ๐ ฌ๐๐ญ is the god ๐น of the Earthโs ๐พ๐พ surface, which the ancient Egyptians called the Upper Earth. Anything that occurred on the Earthโs surface was considered to be Gebโs ๐ ฌ๐๐ญ domain! For example, it is said that Gebโs ๐ ฌ๐๐ญ laughter is what caused earthquakes to happen! Geb ๐ ฌ๐๐ญ was also responsible for allowing crops to grow!ย
Here are the two most common ways to write Gebโs name ๐๐ in hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช:
๐ ฌ๐๐ญ
๐ ฌ๐
Letโs break down each of the symbols!
The โgoose ๐ ฌโ is a biliteral phonogram that represents the sound โgbโ which would have possibly been pronounced like โGeb.โ It can also act as a determinative in certain cases.
The โfoot ๐โ symbol is a uniliteral phonogram that represents the sound โb.โ Here, the โfoot ๐โ symbol is acting as a phonetic complement, meaning itโs emphasizing the โbโ sound from the previous symbol, and was most likely not pronounced.
The โseated god ๐ญโ is a determinative symbol and isnโt pronounced! It acts as โpunctuationโ at the end of the name of a male god!
The hardest part about some of the hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช is distinguishing them from each other! The โgoose ๐ ฌโ and the very popular โpintail duck ๐ ญโ symbols are almost indistinguishable from each other! Not going to lie, sometimes I have difficulty telling the two symbols apart!ย ย
