This beautiful π€ππ art is from a Roman Period mummy mask of a woman and is dated to 60 – 70 A.D. Itβs always incredible to me how art that is just about 2000 years old has paint π¨ππ ±ππΈπ¦ and colors that still look brand new! This art shows two Tyet Knots π¬ and a Djed Pillar π½ (middle).Β
The origin of the Djed Pillar π½ is most likely from the predynastic times while Tyet Knot π¬ is from the First Dynasty/Early Dynastic Period. This means that these symbols were over 3000 years old when this mask was made! It always amazes me how the same religious symbols just persisted through Egyptian history!
The Tyet Knot π¬, also known as the Isis knot π¬, was considered a very strong symbol of protection π ππ‘π and came to be associated with Isis π¨ππ₯. The Egyptians πππππͺ believed that knots π¬ were able to bind and then release magic πππΏπ.
The Djed Pillar π½ represents the word and concept of Stability in ancient Egypt. The Djed pillar π½ is thought to be the spine ππΏππ¦ of Osiris πΉπ¨π, hence why it takes on the meaning of βstability.β
The Isis Knots π¬ and the Djed Pillar π½ were also mostly used in a funerary context, such as amulets ππͺπ π¦ that were placed on mummies ππΉπ ±πΎπͺ or as part of spells ππππ¦ in the Book of the Dead ππππ»π πππ²π³πΊπΌπΊ.
While both the Tyet Knot π¬ and Djed Pillar appear in art frequently, they are also both hieroglyphic symbols and appear in inscriptions!
The βreed column π½β more commonly known as the βDjed Pillarβ is a biliteral phonogram that has the sound βαΈdβ which sounds like βDjed.β It also functions as an ideogram for βStability.β
The βtie π¬β is an ideogram for βTyet Knot π¬β or βIsis Knot π¬β and is a triliteral phonogram associated with the sound βtjtβ which would be pronounced like βtyet.βΒ
