Apparently yesterday π΄ππ³ was World Hippopotamus πππ― Day and I missed it! I guess itβs not that big of a deal because I feel like every day ππ³ is hippo πππ― day to me! This picture ππ ±π is the last time I saw William at the MET before I moved to Florida, and yes I was crying!Β

Itβs no mystery that I love the blue ππΉππΏπΈπ₯ faience π£πππΈπΌ hippos πππ―π¦ that were common during the Middle Kingdom! βWilliamβ is the name ππ given to the blue ππΉππΏπΈπ₯ faience π£πππΈπΌ hippo πππ― at the MET! William was made in the first part of the 12th Dynasty (c. 1961β1878 B.C.E.) and was found in a tomb ππ©ππ in Upper Egypt π.
In Egypt ππ ππ, hippos πππ―π¦ were both feared and respected πππ . They were feared because they were one of the most dangerous animals in the Nile Valley π.
However, hippos πππ―π¦ were also thought to be powerful protectors π ππ‘π against evil, which is why statues ππ ±ππΎπͺ such as Willam were placed in tombs ππ©ππ! If you look closely though, three of Williamβs legs have been restored – they were probably broken off in antiquity to protect the deceased π ππ± from the hippopotamus πππ―!

William has lotus flowers πΈπͺ painted all over him to associate him with rebirth ππΏπ ± and regeneration! William is most likely painted blue ππΉππΏπΈπ₯ to represent the Nile River ππππ ±ππππΊ.Β
I hope everyone had a wonderful World Hippopotamus πππ― Day!
