Here is a very nice raised relief in limestone ππππ which depicts pharaoh ππ» Thutmosis III π π π΄ wearing the blue crown π£πππ (left). He can be identified based off of the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ of his name ππ that appear to his right.
Here are the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ broken down:
π³π π£ – Menkheperra (Thutmosis IIIβs throne name)
πΉπ€ – The Great God
ππΏπΏ – Lord of the Two Lands
Also on the right is the remnant of another person – most likely the pharaoh ππ» Hatshepsut ππ ππΉππππΌπͺ (a portion of a shoulder and a crown are seen, so the presence of the crown allows us to infer that it is in fact another royal figure).
What is super interesting about this piece is that the images ππ ±ππ¦ of the pharaohs ππ»π¦ that are carved are not the actual pharaohs ππ»π¦ themselves, but statues πππππΎπͺ of them! This relief is depicting a religious precession that took place at Hatshepsutβs ππ ππΉππππΌπͺ mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri π¦ππ¦π₯π. This piece was excavated from the temple and is dated to c. 1478-1458 B.C.E.
Here is another example of a limestone ππππ relief of Thutmosis III π π π΄ wearing the blue crown π£πππ. Menkheperra π³π π£ (Thutmosis IIIβs throne name) is above his head πΆπΊ on the relief so we know that it is him! This one is in the Vatican Museum!
While many know that the Ankh πΉ is the symbol that corresponds with the word βLife,β the Ankh πΉ had other symbolic meanings as well – one of which is shown on this relief fragment!
The Ankh πΉ can also symbolize the purifying π΄ππ power of water π. In many temples ππππ¦ in Egypt ππ ππ, a pharaoh ππ» (like Thutmosis III π π π΄ here) is flanked by two π» gods πΉπΉπΉ. One of the gods πΉπΉπΉ who did was was usually Thoth π πππ, but it is impossible to tell which god πΉ is performing the action in this relief. The gods πΉπΉπΉ would pour a stream of Ankhs πΉπΉπΉ over his head πΆπΊ to cleanse π΄ππ and purify π΄ππ him (Fun Fact: cleanse and purify can be the same word in hieroglyphs πΉππͺ but there are other variations of each word too).
Totally unrelated thought but I have always loved the word for water (π) because it is the βnβ symbol! Since my name ππ is Nicole and my name would start with π in hieroglyphs πΉππͺ, as a kid πππ I would refer to π and π as βmy symbolβ π.
