This statue πππππΎ is very interesting because it was originally made for the pharaoh ππ» Amenemhat II ππ ππ ππ during the 12th ππ» Dynasty. However if you look at the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ, the cartouches of Rameses II can be read! The pharaohs ππ»π₯ used to recycle statues πππππΎπͺ all the time – this is a process known as usurping (taking one pharaohβs monuments, erasing their nameππ, and putting yours!). Itβs kind of like ancient plagiarism!
This statue πππππΎ is made of granodiorite, a type of volcanic (igneous) rock ππππ. It was quarried at Aswan π΄πΉπππ²π and then transported up the Nile ππππ ±ππππΊ to Memphis π ππ€πππ΄π, where it was sculpted.
Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
π₯ – King of Upper and Lower Egypt
ππΏπΏ – Lord of the Two Lands
(π³ππ§π³ππ) – Rameses II (throne name Usermaatre)
π π³ – Son of Ra
ππ – His Beloved
(π©ππππ΄π) – Rameses II
π³ππΊ – Like Ra
The image ππ ±π below shows some of the ancient erasing that took place!
