This sphinx ๐๐ ฑ๐ญ๐ค in the Louvre is one of the largest outside of Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐! It is known as the โGreat Sphinx of Tanisโ because it was found in the ruins of the Temple ๐๐๐ of Amun-Ra ๐๐ ๐๐บ๐ณ in Tanis ๐๐๐๐๐! Tanis ๐๐๐๐๐ was the capital of Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐ from the 21st-23rd Dynasties. The sphinx ๐๐ ฑ๐ญ๐ค is made of granite ๐๐๐๐๐ณ๐ฟ – an extremely strong ๐๐๐๐ญ and durable rock ๐๐๐๐!
This sphinx ๐๐ ฑ๐ญ๐ค is so interesting because the cartouches of the pharaohs ๐๐ป๐ฆ Merneptah ๐ณ๐๐๐๐น๐น๐น (19th Dynasty) and Sheshonq I ๐๐ ๐๐ป๐ท๐ท๐๐ (22nd Dynasty) are both seen on the sphinx ๐๐ ฑ๐ญ๐ค. Why are two ๐ป pharaoh’s ๐๐ป names ๐๐๐ฆ there? Well, the Egyptians ๐๐๐๐๐ช used to recycle monuments, a process called “usurping.” The practice of usurping was when the current pharaoh ๐๐ป would take old pharaoh’s ๐๐ป names ๐๐๐ฆ off of monuments and put their own there! It is basically ancient plagiarism and it occurred quite frequently.
Some Egyptologists say this sphinx ๐๐ ฑ๐ญ๐ค actually dates back to the Old Kingdom, as the face ๐ถ๐บ doesn’t represent any known pharaoh ๐๐ป! A book that I have says the sphinx ๐๐ ฑ๐ญ๐ค dates to the Middle Kingdom. We will probably never know!
