So according to the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช, this individual was a Scribe ๐“ž in the treasury ๐“‰’! This was definitely a prestigious job, which is why the person was able to afford such a nice statue ๐“„š๐“ˆ–๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ with hieroglyphic ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ on it! 

Scribe ๐“ž can also be written as ๐“ž๐“€€, and the determinative symbol is missing on this inscription ๐“Ž˜๐“…ฑ๐“Ž–. Treasury is usually always written with the composite symbol/ideogram of ๐“‰’.

Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to be looking at a phrase that could be part of the standard Offering Formula (๐“‡“๐“๐“Šต๐“™ โ€œAn Offering the King Givesโ€). While not as common as some other parts of the Offering Formula, the phrase โ€œ๐“ˆ–๐“‚“๐“ˆ– For the Soul Ofโ€ฆโ€ does appear enough that you will be able to recognize it! 

โ€œ๐“ˆ–๐“‚“๐“ˆ– For the Soul Ofโ€ฆโ€ indicates that the offering is not only being made for the deceased person, but the soul ๐“‚“ of the deceased person, which demonstrates the ancient Egyptian cultural practice of the distinct parts of a personโ€™s identity. In order to exist, a person needed to have five ๐“พ essential elements: the body ๐“Ž›๐“‚๐“„ผ, the shadow ๐“†„๐“๐“…ฑ๐“‹ผ, the Ba ๐“…ก๐“ค, the Ka (soul/life force) ๐“‚“๐“ค, and the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–.

Hieroglyphic Grammar – Making Words Feminine

Todayย ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณย we are going to be looking at some grammar – how to make a word feminine! The inscriptionย ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅย in the picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ says the word โ€œgoddess ๐“Šน๐“.โ€ The word โ€œgod ๐“Šนโ€ is an extremely popular word and is used throughout ancient Egyptian inscriptionsย ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ!

The โ€œcloth wound on a pole ๐“Šนโ€ symbol is both an ideogram and a determinative for the word โ€œgod.โ€ The symbol is thought to sound like โ€œntrโ€ which probably sounds like โ€œneter.โ€ 

Yesterday in my post I mentioned that the โ€œflat loaf of bread ๐“โ€ is a uniliteral phonogram used to represent the sound โ€œt.โ€ It also functions as the ideogram for the word โ€œbread ๐“๐“บโ€ and can be used to make words feminine when placed at the end of the word! 

A Note: just because the โ€œ๐“โ€ appears in a doesnโ€™t mean that the word is automatically feminine – it must be at the end of the word! All nouns in Middle Egyptian were either masculine or feminine, and the masculine nouns had no special ending! The ending of โ€œ๐“โ€ is just an ending, and is not part of the root of the word.

Todayย ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to be looking at a word ๐“Œƒ๐“‚ง๐“…ฑ๐“€ that has two ๐“ป meanings! The wordย ๐“Œƒ๐“‚ง๐“…ฑ๐“€ย is โ€œ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“‚ปโ€ which can mean โ€œcomeโ€ or โ€œwelcomeโ€ depending on the context!ย

Alternate Hieroglyphic Spelling of “Duamutef”

Usually, Duamutef is written as โ€œ๐“‡ผ๐“…๐“๐“†‘,โ€ however, โ€œ๐“‡ผ๐“‚Ÿ๐“๐“†‘โ€ is an alternate spelling for his name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–! While it is only a one symbol difference, that could confuse people who are just learning which is why I wanted to talk about it! Most of the deities in the Egyptian pantheon had multiple ways that their names ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–๐“ฆ written in inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ! Letโ€™s take a look at Duamutefโ€™sย ๐“‡ผ๐“‚Ÿ๐“๐“†‘ย name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– in hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! All of the symbols in Duamutefโ€™sย ๐“‡ผ๐“‚Ÿ๐“๐“†‘ย name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– are phonogram symbols, which means that they represent sounds!ย

The hieroglyphsย ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช on the sistrumย ๐“Šƒ๐“ˆ™๐“ˆ™๐“๐“ฃ are a list of theย pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Tetiโ€™s ๐“Šช๐“‡Œ various names ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–๐“ฅ! Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to be looking at the Horus Name for the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Rameses II! So far, I have really only spoken about the Throne Name (๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ–) and the Birth Name (๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“), so letโ€™s take a closer look at the Horus Name! 

The Horus Name is the oldest way that a pharaohโ€™s ๐“‰๐“‰ป name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– was written/identified and is one of five ๐“พ ways to write the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of a pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป. The Horus Name consists of three elements: the palace facade ๐“Ё, Horus the Falcon ๐“…ƒ standing on top of the palace ๐“Ё, and the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป within the palace ๐“Ё. The palace ๐“Ё hieroglyph ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ is pronounced like โ€œserekhโ€ and some Egyptologists are now referring to the Horus Name as the Serekh Name. This was basically the early version of the cartouche!

โ€œStrong Bull ๐“‚ก๐“ƒ’โ€œ was a very popular way to start off the Horus Name because bulls ๐“ƒ’๐“ƒ’๐“ƒ’ were a symbol of strength ๐“Œ€ and fertility, both of which are qualities that pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฆ wanted to have!

The Shabti Spell

We are going to be taking a (virtual) trip to the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ! As many of you know, I love ushabti ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ figures, so letโ€™s take a closer look at this one! 

The textย ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅย on the ushabtiย ๐“†ท๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พย is a version of the โ€œShabti Spellโ€ from Chapter 6 of the Book of the Dead. This spellย ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“›ย gives the ushabtiย ๐“†ท๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พย the power to complete tasks (farming, manual labor, etc) for the deceasedย ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑย in the Field of Reedsย ๐“‡๐“๐“ˆ…๐“‡‹๐“„ฟ๐“‚‹๐“…ฑ๐“†ฐ๐“Š–. Many people (if they could afford it) were buried with at least 365 ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ๐“ކ๐“ކ๐“ކ๐“ކ๐“ކ๐“ކ๐“พ ushabtiย ๐“†ท๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พย figures – one for each day of the year! Some were buried with even more!ย 

The โ€œShabti Spellโ€ usually starts off with the following phrase:

However, my favorite part of this ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figure is that the word โ€œ๐“†ท๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ shabtiโ€ appears very clearly on the piece! It is part of the spell ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“› that says: โ€œO these shabtis, if you are counted, to do all the works to be done there in the realm of the dead.โ€

There are a bunch of different ways to write โ€œushabtiโ€ in hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! Just like in other languages, we can use the words โ€œshabtiโ€ and โ€œushabtiโ€ to denote the same figures!
