“A Voice Offering” Hieroglyphic Symbol

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to be looking at the word/phrase “A Voice Offering โ€œ๐“‰“.”

๐“‰“ is classified as a composite hieroglyph ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ. A composite hieroglyph ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ is a single hieroglyphic symbol that is actually a combination of multiple symbols! The individual symbols do not lose their phonetic meaning when they become the composite hieroglyph ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ, instead they combine to just make a multi-consonant symbol! Composite hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช can be phonograms, ideograms, or determinatives too!ย 

While a lot of the composite hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช are combinations of two ๐“ป symbols, โ€œ๐“‰“โ€ is actually a combination of four ๐“ฝ symbols! I like to think of composite hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช as a math equation: 

๐“‰“ = ๐“‰ + ๐“Šค + ๐“‘ + ๐“Š

Here is the modern name, (and sound value in parentheses) designated to each of the symbols that are part of ๐“‰“:

๐“‰ – House Plan (pr) 

๐“Šค – Oar (แธซrw)

๐“‘ – Bread (t)

๐“Š – Beer Jug (usually a determinative like in this case, but can be hnw on occasion) 

๐“‰“ would be pronounced like โ€œprt-แธซrw.โ€ย 

A Voice Offering

In terms of meaning, โ€œ๐“‰“โ€ is classified as an ideogram (a single symbol that takes on the meaning of a full word) for the phrase โ€œinvocation offeringโ€ or โ€œvoice offeringโ€ and is a part of the standard offering formula that is seen on stelae ๐“Ž—๐“…ฑ๐“†“๐“‰ธ๐“ช, false doors, sarcophagi ๐“ŽŸ๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“๐“Šญ๐“ช/coffins ๐“‹ด๐“…ฑ๐“Ž›๐“๐“†ฑ๐“ฆ and other funerary equipment ๐“ˆŽ๐“‚‹๐“‹ด๐“๐“๐“Šญ.ย

Why are bread ๐“‘ and beer ๐“Š highlighted in such a popular inscription that persisted for thousands of years? Bread ๐“‘ and beer ๐“Š were pretty much the staples of the ancient Egyptian diet and they needed enough food ๐“‡ฌ๐“€๐“…ฑ๐“”๐“ฅ in the Duat ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“๐“‰ too! 

๐“‰“ Is definitely a great symbol to recognize because it is very common and part of a very common inscription. The pictures ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“ฆ in this post are both from Middle Kingdom sarcophagi ๐“ŽŸ๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“๐“Šญ๐“ช at the MET.

Cow, Beautiful Woman, or Both? – Video

Did you know that the word for โ€œcow ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹๐“๐“ƒ’โ€ and โ€œbeautiful woman ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹๐“๐“โ€ are the same in hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช/the Middle Egyptian language? Well now you do! This is one of my absolute favorite โ€œfun factsโ€ about hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช and it has been since I was a little girl!

The root of both of these words is โ€œ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹โ€ which would probably be pronounced like โ€œnefer.โ€ This word could mean perfect, beautiful, or good in Middle Egyptian! Adding the โ€œ๐“โ€ to the end of the word makes it feminine, and then the determinative symbol distinguishes the meaning! So โ€œ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹๐“โ€ could also mean a beautiful woman or beautiful/perfect! 

Both โ€œcow ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹๐“๐“ƒ’โ€ and โ€œbeautiful woman ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹๐“๐“โ€ would have probably been pronounced like โ€œneferetโ€ due to the addition of the uniliteral phonogram of โ€œ๐“โ€ which would have been pronounced like a โ€œt.โ€ In order to make words pronounceable in modern times, a lot of Egyptologists/linguists will add a soft โ€œeโ€ sound in between the consonants!ย ย

“Revered One” In Hieroglyphs

Letโ€™s read some Hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to look at a word that appears in most funerary inscriptions! This word/phrase is “Revered One ๐“‡‹๐“Œด๐“„ช๐“โ€ and it has many different variations!ย 

Revered One
One of the variants for “Revered One” in hieroglyphs.

โ€œThe Revered One ๐“‡‹๐“Œด๐“„ช๐“โ€ appears on funerary equipment ๐“ˆŽ๐“‚‹๐“‹ด๐“๐“๐“Šญ (coffins ๐“‹ด๐“…ฑ๐“Ž›๐“๐“†ฑ๐“ฆ, False Doors, Canopic Jar Cases, etc.)! This word can be tricky though because there are a lot of different variants of it – meaning that it can be spelled differently depending on how the word is used or the amount of space available on the object.

Bronze Statue of Ptah

This bronze ๐“ˆ”๐“ค๐“ˆ’๐“ฆ statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of the god ๐“Šน Ptah ๐“Šช๐“๐“Ž›๐“ฑ from the Third Intermediate Period is striking to see in person not just because of its wonderful state of preservation, but its size as well!

For a bronze ๐“ˆ”๐“ค๐“ˆ’๐“ฆ statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ, it is quite large! In antiquity, this statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ would have been covered in gold ๐“‹ž๐“ƒ‰๐“ƒ‰๐“ƒ‰ leaf, and itโ€™s amazing that you can still see some of the gold ๐“‹ž๐“ƒ‰๐“ƒ‰๐“ƒ‰ on the statue! Imagine how magnificent it would have looked in all gold ๐“‹ž๐“ƒ‰๐“ƒ‰๐“ƒ‰! I also love how the eyes ๐“น๐“๐“ฆ are still perfectly preserved; they really stand out among the bronze ๐“ˆ”๐“ค๐“ˆ’๐“ฆ and the gold ๐“‹ž๐“ƒ‰๐“ƒ‰๐“ƒ‰!ย 

The staff that Ptah ๐“Šช๐“๐“Ž›๐“ฑ is holding in his hands is actually a merging of the Djed Pillar ๐“Šฝ and the Was Scepter ๐“Œ€. The hieroglyph ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ for Djed ๐“Šฝ means โ€œstabilityโ€ while the hieroglyph ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ for the Was Scepter ๐“Œ€ means โ€œstrength,โ€ and this staff exemplifies Ptahโ€™s ๐“Šช๐“๐“Ž›๐“ฑ representation of both! 

One of the epithets that follows Ptahโ€™s ๐“Šช๐“๐“Ž›๐“ฑ name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– in inscriptions is โ€œThe One of Fair Face ๐“„ค๐“ท๐“ค๐“€ญโ€ and I think that description totally fits with how beautiful ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹ this particular statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ represents him! That epithet could also be translated as โ€œKindly of Face ๐“„ค๐“ท๐“ค๐“€ญโ€ and can also be written as โ€œ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹๐“ท๐“ค๐“€ญ.โ€

Ptah ๐“Šช๐“๐“Ž›๐“ฑ was not created; he existed before anyone else and anything. In short, he was the creator of the other creator gods ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน, like Atum ๐“‡‹๐“๐“‚Ÿ๐“€ญ. Due to Ptahโ€™s ๐“Šช๐“๐“Ž›๐“ฑ creativity, he is also the designated god ๐“Šน of all forms of craftsman such as carpenters , shipbuilders, potters, metalworkers, and sculptors.

This statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ would have been housed in a shrine ๐“๐“Šƒ๐“…“๐“‚œ๐“‰ and would have received offerings ๐“Šต๐“๐“Šช๐“๐“”๐“ฆ from priests ๐“Šน๐“›๐“ช.

The Shabti Spell

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to be learning about the Shabti Spell! The Shabti Spell was a special hieroglyphic inscription ๐“Ž˜๐“…ฑ๐“Ž– which gave the ushabti ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ figure the ability to perform tasks, such as manual labor, for the deceased ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ in the afterlife ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“๐“‰.

The Shabti Spell

We are going to look at the blue ๐“‡‹๐“น๐“๐“„ฟ๐“ธ๐“ฅ faience ๐“‹ฃ๐“ˆ–๐“๐“ธ๐“ผ  ushabti ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ that is in this picture! 

The โ€œShabti Spellโ€ usually starts off with the following phrase: 

๐“‹ด๐“Œ‰๐“†“๐“‡ถ – The Illuminated One

๐“น๐“Šจ๐“€ญ – The Osiris

Then the โ€œShabti Spellโ€ will usually list the deceasedโ€™s ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ job/titles: 

๐“Ÿ – Scribe

๐“‰’ – Treasury

So this specific ushabtiโ€™s ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ spell starts off with โ€œThe Illuminated One, The Osiris, The Scribe of the Treasuryโ€ฆโ€ – after this, the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of the deceased ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ person would appear (we canโ€™t see it the text wraps around the ushabti) and then the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of either the deceasedโ€™s ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ mother ๐“…๐“๐“ or father ๐“‡‹๐“๐“€€ would also be listed. 

The word for โ€œushabti ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พโ€ also appears in the Shabti Spell! It is usually part of the phrase โ€œO these Shabtis, if I am counted, if I am reckoned at any works in the godโ€™s landโ€ฆโ€ which is the part of the spell ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“› that calls on the ushabti ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ to do the work for the deceased ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ in the afterlife ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“๐“‰ so it is very important because this is the whole point of the ushabti ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ figure!ย

Lord of the Nine Bows

Did you know that Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ƒฃ was referred to as the โ€œLord ๐“ŽŸ of the Nine Bows ๐“€๐“บ๐“โ€ in certain religious texts? The most famous example of the use of this title for Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ƒฃ is from the Pyramid Texts! Letโ€™s take a closer look at what this means! 

The โ€œnine bows ๐“€๐“บ๐“โ€ was a phrase that was used to refer to the enemies of Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š–. Egyptologists and historians actually still donโ€™t know the exact countries or territories were represented by the nine bows ๐“€๐“บ๐“, but they are agreed to be foreign lands.ย

In statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช, pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฅ can be depicted standing on nine bows ๐“€๐“บ๐“, however on scarabs ๐“๐“Šช๐“‚‹๐“‚‹๐“†ฃ๐“ช or seals such as this one pictured, the nine bows ๐“€๐“บ๐“ are represented by the images of nine captives with their hands tied behind their backs. A recumbent jackal (aka Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ƒฃ) is seen presiding over the nine captives. 

Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ƒฃ is most commonly known as the god ๐“Šน of mummification ๐“‹ด๐“‚ง๐“๐“…ฑ๐“Ž, however, in many early myths he had proven himself in battle hence why he was given the title โ€œLord ๐“ŽŸ of the Nine Bows ๐“€๐“บ๐“.โ€ย 

Seals such as these were popular in the Theban necropolis during the 18th Dynasty. This is such a small piece, but one that contains so much meaning. I of course love it because I look for any representation of Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ƒฃ that I can find!ย

Large Granite Statue of Hatshepsut – Video

This large red granite ๐“…“๐“Œณ๐“๐“Žถ statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช is large and majestic and one of the most beautiful ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹!ย 

The most striking aspect of this statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ besides the size is the fact that Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช face, which displays feminine features, remained pretty much intact! Many of Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช have the faces destroyed, possibly in an attempt to destroy her image ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ so she would be forgotten from history.

Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช is in a kneeling position holding a nemset jar ๐“Œ๐“บ in each hand ๐“‚ง๐“๐“บ. In ancient Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š–, kneeling is considered a worshipping ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“€ข/offering ๐“Šต๐“๐“Šช๐“๐“”๐“ฆ position. A pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป only kneels to another god ๐“Šน, who in this case is probably Amun-Ra ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“บ.

Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช is depicted wearing the nemes ๐“ˆ–๐“…“๐“‹ด head cloth and the false beard which was typical fashion for a pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป!

To the ancient Egyptians ๐“†Ž๐“๐“€€๐“๐“ช, words were powerful because if something was written down, it was put into existence for all eternity ๐“†–. This is why they put such importance on preserving the image ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ and name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of the deceased ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ person. This is also probably why Rameses II usurped as many statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช of previous pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฅ as he could and put his name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– on them!

Many Egyptian phrases mention life ๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“, such as the most popular ones like โ€œGiven Life ๐“™๐“‹น,โ€œ โ€œGiven Life for Eternity ๐“™๐“‹น๐“†–,โ€ and โ€œGiven Life, Stability and Strength ๐“™๐“‹น๐“Šฝ๐“Œ€.โ€ 

In Middle Egyptian, โ€œLifeโ€ can be either written as: 

๐“‹น – just the single โ€œankhโ€ symbol 

๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“ – the full word written out (which is what is pictured) 

The lone ๐“‹น symbol is a triliteral phonogram with the sound โ€œหnแธซโ€ which is commonly pronounced as โ€œankh.โ€ The word โ€œหnแธซโ€ means life on its own! 

The two phonograms that follow after the ๐“‹น are phonetic complements, meaning that the sounds they represent arenโ€™t pronounced a second time, but they are used to show the reader how the triliteral symbol is pronounced! In hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช, some symbols can have multiple pronunciations depending on how the symbol is used, so the phonetic complements help to clear up any confusion!  

The โ€œ๐“ˆ–โ€ is associated with the sound of โ€œn!โ€ The โ€œ๐“โ€ is associated with the sound โ€œแธซ.โ€ So these to uniliteral phonograms complement the sound of the ๐“‹น symbol!

Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ, we are going to look at my favorite word to spot in inscriptions: Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“ƒฃ! Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ƒฃ is my favorite Egyptian god ๐“Šน, so I love spotting the different variants of his name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–! His name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– turns up a lot because Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ƒฃ is one of the main funerary gods ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน, and a large part of Egyptian artifacts that are in museums happen to be funerary objects ๐“ˆŽ๐“‚‹๐“‹ด๐“๐“๐“Šญ! 

Letโ€™s take a closer look at the symbols! 

The โ€œreed ๐“‡‹โ€ is a uniliteral phonogram for โ€œฤฑอ—,โ€ however it can also function as an ideogram for the word โ€œreed ๐“‡‹๐“บ.โ€ 

The โ€œripple of water ๐“ˆ–โ€ is also a uniliteral phonogram. The โ€œ๐“ˆ–โ€ is associated with the sound of โ€œn!โ€ 

The โ€œstool ๐“Šชโ€ symbol is a uniliteral phonogram for the sound โ€œp.โ€ 

The โ€œrecumbent jackal on shrine ๐“ƒฃโ€ is used as both an ideogram and a determinative. ๐“ƒฃ is the determinative in the word โ€œAnubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“ƒฃโ€ and also an ideogram for โ€œAnubis ๐“ƒฃ. When ๐“ƒฃ functions as an ideogram, the โ€œ๐“ƒฃโ€ would be pronounced the same as โ€œ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ƒฃ,โ€ which is the full way to write the name. This is my absolute favorite hieroglyphic symbol!

The proper way to say Anubis in Middle Egyptian is โ€œฤฑอ—npwโ€ (pronounced like โ€œInpuโ€ or โ€œAnpuโ€). Even though the quail chick is missing in this variant, the determinative of Anubis ๐“ƒฃ just implies the full spelling! 

The name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– โ€œAnubisโ€ is actually the Greek version of his name, not the Middle Egyptian name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–, so that is why the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช donโ€™t match up with how we are so used to saying Anubis/Inpu/Anpuโ€™s name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–!
