Head of Akhenaten or Nefertiti?

The MET has this piece listed as โ€œHead of Akhenaten or Nefertitiโ€ but to me, the head looks more like Nefertiti ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“‡๐“๐“ญ than Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–! Let me know who you think this piece looks more like in the comments!

This piece is dated to c. 1353โ€“1336 B.C.E., which unsurprisingly is during the reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–. The piece was found during the 1891-1892 excavations of Akhetaten ๐“ˆŒ๐“๐“‰๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“Š– (present-day Amarna) by Flinders Petrie and Howard Carter.

The bust was found in one of the sculptorโ€™s ๐“‹ด๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“๐“€€ workshops. The sculptorโ€™s ๐“‹ด๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“๐“€€ workshops in Akhetaten ๐“ˆŒ๐“๐“‰๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“Š– have been the source of many beautiful ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹ pieces from this time period. I love the artifacts that are found in an unfinished state because it gives such insight into how these incredible ancient Egyptian artists worked and it shows that even the most grand of pieces started off in humble states! If this piece had been finished, would it have looked like the famous Bust of Nefertiti ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“‡๐“๐“ญ? Or was the piece just meant to be a trial piece and this was what it was supposed to look like?

One of my favorite things about this account is I get to learn as I am teaching! I did not know the word for โ€œsculptor ๐“‹ด๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“๐“€€โ€ off the top of my head so I looked it up! One of the alternative translations for โ€œsculptor ๐“‹ด๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“๐“€€โ€œ is โ€œLife Giverโ€ which I find so fascinating – it really gives insight into the Egyptian culture because the image ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ or statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of a person could give ๐“™ life ๐“‹น to them after death!

Akhenaten and Nefertiti

When I went to the Louvre in 2015, this was one of my must-see pieces! The love story of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– and Nefertiti ๐“„ค๐“๐“‡๐“˜๐“— has always fascinated me . This painted limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ reminds me of the popular โ€œcouples statues,โ€ which depict a husband and wife sitting together, that were prominent in burials during the Old Kingdom!

Akhenaten and Nefertiti

Nefertiti ๐“„ค๐“๐“‡๐“˜๐“— was the โ€œGreat Royal Wife ๐“‡“๐“๐“ˆž๐“๐“…จโ€ of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–. This statue depicts Nefertiti ๐“„ค๐“๐“‡๐“˜๐“— (left) and Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– (right) holding hands and walking forward. We know they are walking forward because one foot is placed in front of the other.

Letโ€™s talk about their clothing! They both have sandals ๐“ฟ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“‹ธ๐“ช on their feet and wearing broad collars ๐“…ฑ๐“‹ด๐“๐“Žบ๐“‹๐“ฆ, the necklace ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡‹๐“๐“‹ง of choice for royals and the gods ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน. Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– is also wearing the blue Khepresh crown ๐“†ฃ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ™๐“‹™ on his head, while Nefertiti appears to be wearing what looks like the red crown ๐“‚ง๐“ˆ™๐“‚‹๐“๐“‹”, but there is blue ๐“‡‹๐“น๐“๐“„ฟ๐“ธ๐“ฅ paint ๐“‡จ๐“‚‹๐“…ฑ๐“ญ๐“ธ๐“ฆ on it! . The Uraeus ๐“‡‹๐“‚๐“‚‹๐“๐“†— is still present on the front of both crowns!

What was the purpose of this statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ? This most likely came from a private home, where it was used in a shrine ๐“๐“Šƒ๐“…“๐“‚œ๐“‰ to worship ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“€ข Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– and Nefertiti ๐“„ค๐“๐“‡๐“˜๐“—. The common people would worship Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– and Nefertiti ๐“„ค๐“๐“‡๐“˜๐“— because they were thought to be manifestations ๐“†ฃ๐“†ฃ๐“†ฃ of the Aten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ here on Earth.

The typical Amarna-style (elongated faces and limbs, more body fat in the stomach and thighs) is present here, which makes it very easy to identify these figures as Nefertiti ๐“„ค๐“๐“‡๐“˜๐“— and Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–. The Amarna art revolution is so interesting because Egyptian art didnโ€™t change much until Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– rule, then there was this drastic change, and then once Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– died, the ancient Egyptians ๐“†Ž๐“๐“€€๐“๐“ช reverted back to the traditional art style and it stated that way for the rest of the civilization.

Reading Hieroglyphs Ushabti Friends

Ushabtis and Hieroglyphs

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ, we are going to combine two of my favorite things: ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ and hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

Ushabtis and Hieroglyphs
This display combines two of my favorite things: Ushabtis and Hieroglyphs! This ushabti belonged to a woman named Isis and is on display at the MET.

This ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ is made out of limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ and was made for a woman named Isis ๐“Šจ๐“๐“†‡๐“ who was ironically a singer for the Aten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ !

This ushabti ๐“™๐“๐“‚๐“Šค was made during the 18th Dynasty reign of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–. The 18th Dynasty is almost the โ€œgolden ageโ€ of ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ because they undergo much development during this time period. Itโ€™s very easy to date this ushabti because the Aten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ was only worshipped during his reign! Also, the ushabtiโ€™s ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ hands are crossed in a mummiform way and holding tools – another 18th Dynasty clue!

Hereโ€™s the full inscription on the ushabti: ๐“‡“๐“‚๐“๐“ˆ–๐“…ฎ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ ๐“Šจ๐“๐“†‡๐“๐“™๐“๐“‚๐“Šค

Letโ€™s break down the inscription by each individual word:

๐“‡“๐“‚๐“ – Singer

๐“ˆ– – of

๐“…ฎ – (indicates past tense)

๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ – Aten

๐“Šจ๐“๐“†‡๐“ – Isis

๐“™๐“๐“‚๐“Šค – True of Voice/justified

While limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ is not the most common material for ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ to be made out of, itโ€™s not unheard of to have ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ like this during the 18th Dynasty period.

It always fascinates me that even though Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– completely changed the whole ancient Egyptian religion during his reign, certain aspects of the original religion, such as ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ, remained.

Royal 18th Dynasty Ushabtis – Ushabti Friends

As part of my โ€œUshabti Friendsโ€ series, I am teaching you how to look at the different characteristics of ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ and how those characteristics can help you to narrow down the age/time period that the ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ is from! Today we are going to look at Royal 18th Dynasty Ushabtis!

All of the ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ we are going to look at today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ are royal ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ that all belonged to pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฆ from the 18th Dynasty! The 18th Dynasty is almost the โ€œgolden ageโ€ of ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ because these little guys undergo much development during this time period and have so many different characteristics!ย

The wooden ushabti of Amenhotep III

The wooden ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ of Amenhotep III ๐“‡ณ๐“ง๐“Ž  is very interesting because it has a very distinct characteristic of 18th Dynasty ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ that is not just one found on royal ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ!

Royal 18th Dynasty Ushabtis
A closeup of the wooden ushabti of Amenhotep III to highlight where a hoe or other tools would have been placed in his hands!

There is a space in the hands where tools would have been inserted – such as a hoe ๐“Œธ. Tools that were attached separately were only found in the 18th Dynasty!

The โ€œShabti Spellโ€ is also on the ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ!ย

The rock based ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ of Amenhotep II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Šต๐“๐“Šช and Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– are all seen holding Ankh symbols in their hands which are crossed over their chest in a mummiform fashion.

Ushabti of Akhenaten holding Ankhs in each hand

I have only seen royal ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ with Ankhs ๐“‹น! I find this to be commentary on the religion because a deceased pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป would not have to be doing work anyway – he probably was buried with ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ just in case! This is probably why some of the royal ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ have Ankhs ๐“‹น and not tools!ย

These ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ also have false beards and are wearing some type of royal crown to distinguish that they are pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฆ!

Ushabti of Akhenaten

This piece is listed as a โ€œFunerary Figureโ€ by the MET, but I think they mean to call it a ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ! This particular ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ belonged to Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–, and he had many ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ made in various styles from many different materials (you can see another ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ of his in the background of this photo). The ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figures that belonged to him are made in the typical Amarna-art style.ย

Ushabti of Akhenaten
The only fully preserved Ushabti of Akhenaten on display at the MET.

While are over 200 ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figures that belonged to Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ–, this red granite ๐“…“๐“Œณ๐“๐“Žถ ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ is the only known one that is complete! Red granite ๐“…“๐“Œณ๐“๐“Žถ is a very durable rock ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‚‹๐“ˆ™ because it is composed of over 60% quartz ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Œ๐“ˆ™, which is a very hard mineral ๐“‡‹๐“Œป๐“‚‹๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™ so it makes sense that this particular ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ would be the one to remain complete!

It seems strange that Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ– would be buried with ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ๐“ช because he completely changed the Egyptian religion from the traditional polytheistic worship ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“€ข to the monotheistic worship ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“€ข of the Aten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ. This shows that while he did completely change Egyptโ€™s ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– religion, some aspects of the old religion, such as belief in the afterlife ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“๐“‰, did remain and persist throughout his rule ๐“‹พ. Personally, Iโ€™m glad the ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ๐“ช were able to stick around because theyโ€™re my favorite!!

Most ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ๐“ช contain standard inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ known as the โ€œshabti spellโ€ or โ€œshabti textโ€ from Chapter 6 of the Book of the Dead, which is the spell ๐“Ž›๐“‚“๐“› that allows the ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figure to perform work for the deceased in the afterlife ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“๐“‰. Due to the change in religion, none of Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ– ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ๐“ช contain the โ€œShabti Spell;โ€ they only contain inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ of his name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– and titles.

Fragment of Akhenaten

This is a fragment of what used to be a limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of the pharaoh Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–! This (and many others like it) were found during Flinders Petrie and Howard Carterโ€™s excavation at present-day Amarna in 1891, which in ancient times was called Akhetaten ๐“ˆŒ๐“๐“‰๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“Š–. Akhetaten ๐“ˆŒ๐“๐“‰๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“Š– was the capital of Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– during the reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ–.ย

Fragment of Akhenaten
A Fragment of Akhenaten – many of Akhenaten’s statues were intentionally destroyed after his reign

Many of Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช not only have the faces destroyed, but are also in hundreds of pieces. This deliberate destruction of his statuary was an attempt to destroy his image ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ so he would be forgotten from history. Images/statues of a person, and the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of a person held immense power in ancient Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– so if a name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– and image ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ was destroyed, its power was removed!ย

A Fragment of Akhenaten – a front view of the statue where the extent of the damage to his face can be clearly seen.

Why did Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– successors want his image ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ destroyed? Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– is infamous for completely changing the Egyptian pantheon from polytheistic worship of the traditional gods ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน to the monotheistic worship of the Aten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ and people definitely did not like that! When Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– son, Tutankhamun ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“‹น๐“‹พ๐“‰บ๐“‡“ became the pharaoh, he reinstated the old religion and moved the capital of Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– back to Thebes ๐“Œ€๐“๐“Š–.

Now, calling this his โ€œbirth nameโ€ cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท is a little misleading because Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– birth name wasnโ€™t actually โ€œAkhenaten!โ€ The name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– that Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– was given when he was born was Amenhotep ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Šต๐“Šน๐“‹พ๐“Œ€, and since he was the fourth pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป with that name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–, Egyptologists have called him โ€œAmenhotep IV ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Šต๐“Šน๐“‹พ๐“Œ€.โ€

Why did Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– change his name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– from Amenhotep ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Šต๐“Šน๐“‹พ๐“Œ€ to Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– during year five ๐“พ of his reign? The change in name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– reflects the religious revolution that was happening at the time. Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– is famous for disrupting the entire Egyptian religious tradition and changing it from a polytheistic worship of the traditional pantheon to a monotheistic worship of the Aten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ.

Letโ€™s break down the meaning of Akhenatenโ€™s name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–!

๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ – Aten

๐“…œ๐“ – Spirit

๐“ˆ– – Of

The Cartouche of Akhenaten with the meaning of the hieroglyphs written next to the symbols.

So all together, the name โ€œAkhenatenโ€ translates to โ€œSpirit of the Aten.โ€ย

One of the greatest things about reading cartouches ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท๐“ช is that practicing with them will allow you to begin to understand hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช much more easily! The names of the pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป contain many common symbols, words, and phrases in Middle Egyptian! One of the ways I started learning was by reading the cartouches ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท๐“ช!

Ushabti Figure of Akhenaten

There are over 200 ๐“ฒ๐“ฒ ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figures that belonged to Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ– and some of them are on display at the MET! This particular Ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ Figure of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ– though broken in half, has a wonderfully preserved face and partial inscription!

It seems strange that Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ– would be buried with ushabtis ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ๐“ช because he completely changed the Egyptian religion from the traditional polytheistic worship ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“€ข to the monotheistic worship ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“€ข of the Aten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ. This shows that while he did completely change Egyptโ€™s ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– religion, some aspects of the old religion, such as belief in the afterlife ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“๐“‰, did remain and persist throughout his rule ๐“‹พ.ย

Most of Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ– ushabtis ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ๐“ช are in various states of disarray. While most ushabtis ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ๐“ช contain standard inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ known as the โ€œshabti spellโ€ or โ€œshabti text,โ€ Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ– ushabtis ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ๐“ช only contain inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ of his name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– and titles. Letโ€™s take a look at the partial inscription ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ!

You can see the inscription of โ€œ๐“†ฅ,โ€ which as we have learned previously can translate to โ€œHe of the Sedge and the Beeโ€ or โ€œKing of Upper and Lower Egypt.โ€ As we know, this is a very popular title to be seen before a cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท!

The โ€œ๐“‡ณโ€ in the cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท is part of one of Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ– throne names, which would most likely be โ€œ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“†ฃ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“Œก๐“ˆ–,โ€ since that is the only one of Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ– throne name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– variants that begins with a โ€œ๐“‡ณ.โ€

Even though โ€œ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“†ฃ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“Œก๐“ˆ–โ€ translates to โ€œThe Beautiful One of the Manifestations of Ra, the Unique one of Ra,โ€ this variant was only seen after the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– change from Amenhotep IV ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Šต๐“Šน๐“‹พ๐“Œ€ to Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…ž๐“๐“ˆ–!

Akhenaten and Me!

Iโ€™ve never shared this picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ because of the glare, but not every picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ needs to be perfect ๐“„ค! My Nonno took this photo ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– and me at the Louvre in what I call the โ€œAmarna Gallery!โ€ ย  You can tell by my smile how happy ๐“„ซ๐“…ฑ๐“› I was!ย Seeing a statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ in real life that I have only seen in books feels like meeting a celebrity!

Akhenaten and Me
Akhenaten and Me at the Louvre!

The Louvre has an impressive collection of statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช and artifacts from Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ and I was so excited to be able to see them – this was probably the gallery I spent the most time in at the Louvre! After Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“, Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– is my second favorite pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป!

This particular limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– surprised me when I saw it in person for the first time! I thought it was going to be a lot smaller, so I was shocked to see just how big it was! The piece is also incredibly well preserved – the Uraeus ๐“‡‹๐“‚๐“‚‹๐“๐“†— on Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– forehead is still somewhat intact, and the design details on the skirt are clearly defined. Also, Akhenaten is holding both the crook ๐“‹พ and flail ๐“Œ… in one hand ๐“‚๐“บ instead of one in each hand ๐“‚๐“บ!

The Louvre has this statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ named โ€œStatue of an Amarna King.โ€ To me, this statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ looks like it is from the early part of Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ because there are both traditional Egyptian elements and Amarna-era elements (elongated face and limbs, more body fat in the stomach and thighs) present in the statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ. If I were to guess, this was probably made before year 5 ๐“พ of Akhenatenโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“, when he still had the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– Amenhotep IV ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Šต๐“Šน๐“‹พ๐“Œ€. However, there are no hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช on the statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ to confirm this, I am basing this inference just on the artistic style alone!

This piece really is just stunning to see in person!
