My sister ๐ข๐๐ has always said that this piece reminds her of the childrenโs book โThe Rainbow Fish,โ and thanks to her thatโs how I always refer to this piece!ย

This beautifully ๐ค colored fish ๐๐ ๐ represents a tilapia ๐๐๐๐๐! The Egyptians ๐๐๐๐๐ช viewed the tilapia ๐๐๐๐๐ as a symbol of regeneration and rebirth ๐๐ฟ๐ ฑ. Both of these concepts were super important in the Egyptian religion, so they held tilapia ๐๐๐๐๐ in very high regard!
What is so cool about this piece is that it is actually a rattle! There are little clay ๐ช๐๐ด๐ pellets inside of it, which represents the eggs. This was most likely a ritual object; either played during childbirth or placed in a tomb ๐๐ซ๐๐ to help the deceased ๐ ๐๐ฑ with their rebirth ๐๐ฟ๐ ฑ!
The blue ๐ ๐๐ coloring on the fish ๐๐ ๐ is purely decorative as tilapia ๐๐๐๐๐ are not this color in real life! However, these particular colors used (blue ๐ ๐๐, red ๐ง๐๐๐ and black ๐๐ ) are very typical of the color palette used at Amenhotep IIIโs ๐ณ๐ง๐ palace at Malqata and at Amarna ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ during Akhenatenโs ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ reign. This piece is estimated to be from the late 18th Dynasty and is thought to be from Saqqara ๐ ๐๐ค๐๐๐ด๐.
From a hieroglyphic standpoint, the tilapia symbol ๐ is the main determinative for โfish ๐๐ ๐!โ This demonstrates just how important the Egyptians viewed the tilapia – a lot of their fish related words contained the tilapia ๐! Tilapia also has its own word which is โ๐๐๐๐๐.โย

Thanks ๐ด๐๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ข to my sister ๐ข๐๐ for taking this picture ๐๐ ฑ๐!
