My sister ๐ข๐๐๐, my brother ๐ข๐๐ and I are with a red granite ๐ ๐ณ๐๐ถ temple ๐๐๐ relief, titled โLintel of Amenhotep II!โ This is a really interesting piece that contains so much history!ย

This piece was originally carved for the 18th Dynasty pharaoh ๐๐ป Amenhotep II ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐๐ช. Amenhotep II ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐๐ช was the son ๐ ญ of Thutmosis III ๐ณ๐ ๐ฃ and he even co-ruled with his father! It was during the co-reign of Thutmosis III ๐ณ๐ ๐ฃ and Amenhotep II ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐๐ช that the destruction of Hatshepsutโs ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐๐๐ผ๐ช monuments ๐ ๐ began.ย
This relief shows mirrored scenes of Amenhotep II ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐๐ช wearing the khepresh crown ๐ฃ๐๐๐ (also known as the blue crown) presenting nemset jars ๐๐๐ (containing either wine or water ) to the god ๐น Amun-Ra ๐๐ ๐๐ณ๐บ.
Over fifty ๐ years after this relief was carved, many of the figures (see the left side) and the name ๐๐ of the god ๐น Amun-Ra ๐๐ ๐๐ณ๐บ were destroyed by the pharaoh ๐๐ป Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ in an attempt to erase images ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ฆ of the old religion.
Then, many years after Akhenaten ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ ๐๐ during the 19th Dynasty, the pharaoh ๐๐ป Seti I ๐ช๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ธ๐ had some of the damage repaired – most of the hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช and the images ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ฆ of Amenhotep II ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐๐ช and Amun-Ra ๐๐ ๐๐ณ๐บ were actually recarved! How can Egyptologists tell it was recarved? The sunken relief is deeper in the rock!
In order to show that it was he, pharaoh ๐๐ป Seti I ๐ช๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ธ๐ who restored this piece, he had his cartouches ๐ ๐๐๐ท๐ฆ and a record of the restoration carved in between the two ๐ป images ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ฆ of Amun-Ra ๐๐ ๐๐ณ๐บ! Can you spot Seti Iโs throne name (๐ณ๐ฆ๐ ) and birth name (๐ช๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ธ๐) cartouches ๐ ๐๐๐ท๐ฆ in the picture ๐๐ ฑ๐?
The description of this piece from the British Museum gave a short timeline of the history of this fascinating piece! I remember being confused by seeing the cartouches ๐ ๐๐๐ท๐ฆ of both Amenhotep II ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐๐ช and Seti I ๐ช๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ธ๐ on the same relief because they are pharaohs ๐๐ป๐ฆ from different dynasties! Whatโs even more interesting is that this is not a case of the more common โusurping of monuments ๐ ๐โ from previous pharaohs ๐๐ป๐ฆ!
