Letโs read some hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช!
This wooden ๐ฑ๐๐บ mummiform coffin ๐ ฑ๐๐พ belonged to a man named Amenemopet who lived during the early part of the 22nd Dynasty (c. 975โ909 B.C.E.).ย This coffin ๐ ฑ๐๐พ has what I like to call “The Osiris Cartouche” painted inside!

If you look closely at the beautiful ๐ค๐๐ artwork inside this mummiform coffin ๐ ฑ๐๐พ thereโs a lot of different things going on! The uppermost row of artwork in the picture ๐๐ ฑ๐ shows Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ purifying ๐ด๐๐ the deceased ๐ ๐๐ฑ, whose is surrounded by offering tables ๐๐๐ ก๐ฟ๐ covered in food ๐ฌ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ฅ!
Above Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ there are some hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช:
๐ โ Lord
๐ฝ – Duat (the ancient Egyptian word for โNetherworldโ)
Is it Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ being referred to as the โLord of the Duat,โ or is it Osiris ๐น๐จ๐ญ? Usually this epithet was used with Osiris ๐น๐จ๐ญ!
One of the cool things you can see on the bottom panel is Osirisโ ๐น๐จ๐ญ name ๐๐ in a cartouche ๐ ๐๐๐ท! Usually the name ๐๐ of a pharaoh ๐๐ป appears in a cartouche ๐ ๐๐๐ท! While this doesnโt happen often, there are instances where the name ๐๐ of a god ๐น will appear in the cartouche ๐ ๐๐๐ท and since this coffin does not belong to a pharaoh, a cartouche ๐ ๐๐๐ท is not expected! But Osiris ๐น๐จ๐ญ was believed to be the first pharaoh ๐๐ป of Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐, so I guess a cartouche ๐ ๐๐๐ท is fitting!
The hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช are: ๐น๐จ๐ญ๐๐๐ณ๐. Letโs break down the symbols!
๐น๐จ๐ญ โ Osiris
๐ โ Lord
๐๐ณ๐ โ Eternity
All ๐ together ๐๐, this translates to โOsiris, Lord of Eternity.โ
The cartouche is flanked by the Golden Horus symbol ๐ on either side which is a Falcon ๐ standing on top of the symbol for gold ๐. The common symbols of protection, the Eye of Horus and Eye of Ra also appear above the Golden Horus ๐ , along with the shen ring in between the Falconโs wings. The Shen ๐ถ symbol is a circle of rope that is tied at the end. The tied rope symbolizes completeness and eternity ๐๐ณ๐.
