The Cartouches of Pharaoh Rameses II

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to look at the throne name and the birth name cartouches ๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท of the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Rameses II! The cartouches ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท๐“ฆ are written on a blue ๐“‡‹๐“น๐“๐“„ฟ๐“ธ๐“ฅ faience ๐“‹ฃ๐“ˆ–๐“๐“ธ๐“ผ cup ๐“Žบ๐“! Cups ๐“Žบ๐“๐“ฆ such as these, which were inscribed with the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป, were commonly found in foundation deposits of building projects that had been commissioned by that particular pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป. These types of cups ๐“Žบ๐“๐“ฆ were usually not owned or used by the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป despite his name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– being on it!ย

The Cartouches of Pharaoh Rameses II

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! We are going to start with the cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท on the left! This is the throne name of Rameses II ๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ–, which is preceded by the normal royal title!ย

๐“ŽŸ – Lord

๐“‡ฟ๐“‡ฟ – Two Lands

๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ– – Usermaatre setep en Ra

The name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– โ€œUsermaatre setep en Ra ๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ–โ€ translates to โ€œThe Justice of Ra is powerful, Chosen of Ra.โ€ Letโ€™s look at the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– more closely:

๐“‡ณ – Ra

๐“„Š – Powerful

๐“ง – Justice (Mast)

๐“‡ณ – Ra

๐“‰๐“ˆ– – Chosen

Now letโ€™s look at the cartouche ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท on the right! This is the birth name of Rameses II ๐“ฉ๐“›๐“ˆ˜๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ which is also preceded by the normal royal title!

๐“ŽŸ – Lord

๐“ˆ๐“ฅ – Appearances

๐“ฉ๐“›๐“ˆ˜๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ – Ramessu mery Amun

The name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– โ€œRamessu mery Amun ๐“ฉ๐“›๐“ˆ˜๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“โ€ translates to โ€œRa has fashioned him, beloved of Amun.โ€ The name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– could also be translated as โ€œRa Bore Him.โ€ Letโ€™s look at the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– more closely:

๐“ฉ – Amun

๐“› – Ra

๐“ˆ˜ – Beloved

๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ – Bore Him/Fashioned Him/Born Of

Both of the cartouches ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ท๐“ฆ are sitting on top of the hieroglyphic symbol for โ€œgold ๐“‹ž.โ€ย The pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป was associated with gold because the skin of the gods ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน were thought to be made of gold ๐“‹ž๐“ƒ‰๐“ƒ‰๐“ƒ‰. Since the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป was a god ๐“Šน on Earth, it makes sense that he would be considered to be golden!

Large Granite Statue of Queen Tiye

This large granite ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“ˆ–๐“Œณ๐“ฟ statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of Queen Tiye ๐“˜๐“‡Œ๐“ญ๐“— has quite the story and journey through history! It’s amazing how some pieces can start off in one place, but end up in a completely different location! Letโ€™s take a closer look at this striking piece that is currently at the Vatican Museum, and follow her journey from Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– to Rome!

Queen Tiye at the Vatican Museum

This statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ definitely resembles other works of Queen Tiye ๐“˜๐“‡Œ๐“ญ๐“— – from the characteristic wig to the distinct face shape and design. In my opinion, there is no doubt that this statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ was originally Queen Tiye ๐“˜๐“‡Œ๐“ญ๐“—. Queen Tiye ๐“˜๐“‡Œ๐“ญ๐“— was married to the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Amenhotep III ๐“‡ณ๐“ง๐“Ž  and possessed the title of โ€œKingโ€™s Great Wife ๐“‡“๐“ˆž๐“,โ€ which pretty much meant that she was his favorite wife. Queen Tiye ๐“˜๐“‡Œ๐“ญ๐“— was actually the mother ๐“…๐“๐“ of Akhenaten ๐“‡‹๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ๐“…œ๐“๐“ˆ– and Tutankhamunโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“‹น๐“‹พ๐“‰บ๐“‡“ grandmother!ย

After some time had passed, the great usurper, Rameses II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“, recognized the beauty ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹ of this statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ and brought it to his mortuary temple ๐“‰Ÿ๐“๐“‰ where he had it dedicated to his mother ๐“…๐“๐“ (and wife of Seti I ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“ ), Tuya ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“‡‹๐“„ฟ๐“—. โ€œUsurpingโ€ was a popular practice where pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฅ would take old statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ ๐“ช from previous pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฅ and put their names ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–๐“ฆ on it. Think of it as ancient plagiarism!

Then, the statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ made its way out of Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– and to Rome! For a long time, the statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ adorned the โ€œGardens of Sallust,โ€ which belonged to the Emperor Caligula ๐“ˆ๐“‹พ๐“ฉ๐“„ฟ๐“ฒ๐“๐“Žผ๐“ƒญ๐“‚ง๐“‚‹๐“ฐ at the time. Many Roman Emperors liked Egyptian art, and some (like Caligula ๐“ˆ๐“‹พ๐“ฉ๐“„ฟ๐“ฒ๐“๐“Žผ๐“ƒญ๐“‚ง๐“‚‹๐“ฐ and Hadrian ๐“‰”๐“๐“‚‹๐“‚๐“ˆ–๐“Šƒ๐“ˆŽ๐“Šƒ๐“‚‹) had pieces from ancient Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š– brought to Rome to adorn their gardens ๐“Ž›๐“Šƒ๐“Šช๐“ˆˆ๐“ฅ or estates. This statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ was then re-discovered in 1714 and was brought to the Vatican Museums in 1839.

Small Stela of the Vizier Paser

This tiny ๐“ˆ–๐“†“๐“‹ด๐“…ฉ and unassuming stela ๐“Ž—๐“…ฑ๐“†“๐“‰ธ at the Louvre is really important to me and my Nonno because it depicts Paser ๐“…ฎ๐“€™๐“€ฝ, who was my Nonnoโ€™s favorite non-royal Egyptian! Nonno and I would always make it a point to try and find something related to Paser ๐“…ฎ๐“€™๐“€ฝ in every museum we went to!

Though he wasnโ€™t a royal, Paser ๐“…ฎ๐“€™๐“€ฝ was one of the most prominent men of his time and he was vizier ๐“…ท๐“๐“บ๐“€€ under two ๐“ป pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป – Seti I ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“  and then Rameses II ๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ–.  Paser ๐“…ฎ๐“€™๐“€ฝ served many different roles over twenty-five ๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“พ years! Paser ๐“…ฎ๐“€™๐“€ฝ was also an architect and one of his most famous works is the tomb ๐“‡‹๐“ซ๐“Šƒ๐“‰ of Seti I ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“  in the Valley of the Kings!

A vizier ๐“…ท๐“๐“บ๐“€€ was the highest ranking official ๐“‹ด๐“‚‹๐“€€ and was the most powerful position in the government, besides the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป. Not only was the vizier ๐“…ท๐“๐“บ๐“€€ the most trusted advisor to the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป, but he also saw to the day-to-day operations of the government. The vizier ๐“…ท๐“๐“บ๐“€€ was in charge of architecture, taxation, agriculture, military, the judiciary, finances, and many other things. Honestly that sounds exhausting, however, his hard work got Paser ๐“…ฎ๐“€™๐“€ฝ a nice tomb ๐“‡‹๐“ซ๐“Šƒ๐“‰ for himself, so thatโ€™s how we know so much about him! I guess wanting to preserve his name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– for eternity ๐“Ž›๐“‡ณ๐“Ž› was a success!

Paser ๐“…ฎ๐“€™๐“€ฝ had many different titles, including โ€œHigh Preist of Amun ๐“Šน๐“›๐“Œ๐“ˆ–๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ ,โ€ โ€œsuperintendent of every work of the king,โ€ โ€œprophet of Maat,โ€ โ€œmouth of Nekhenโ€ and โ€œchief of secrets of the hieroglyphs.โ€ This last title is probably why he is depicted with the god Thoth ๐“…๐“๐“ญ๐“€ญ on this small ๐“ˆ–๐“†“๐“‹ด๐“…ฉ stela ๐“Ž—๐“…ฑ๐“†“๐“‰ธ!

I wish I could see the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช more clearly, but I can see Paserโ€™s ๐“…ฎ๐“€™๐“€ฝ name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– on the bottom part of the stela ๐“Ž—๐“…ฑ๐“†“๐“‰ธ!

Sorry the first picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ is a bit blurry – I wanted to get as close as I could! The second picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ shows how small ๐“ˆ–๐“†“๐“‹ด๐“…ฉ the stela ๐“Ž—๐“…ฑ๐“†“๐“‰ธ is in relation to other objects!

Hieroglyphs from the Abydos King List!

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

These beautiful ๐“„ค hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช are from the Abydos King List at the British Museum. There are two ๐“ป surviving King Lists from temples ๐“‰Ÿ๐“๐“‰๐“ช at Abydos, the cult center of Osiris ๐“น๐“Šจ๐“€ญ. One temple ๐“‰Ÿ๐“๐“‰ is from Seti I ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“ , and the other from his son ๐“…ญ Rameses II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“œ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“Šƒ, who were both pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฅ during the 19th Dynasty. Seti Iโ€™s ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“  list is still in the temple ๐“‰Ÿ๐“๐“‰ at Abydos, while Rameses IIโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“œ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“Šƒ was excavated and brought to the British Museum.ย

While the two ๐“ป lists were very similar, Rameses IIโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“œ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“Šƒ had more rows to accommodate the names ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–๐“ฆ so it appears to be shorter. There are three ๐“ผ rows of cartouches on the remaining limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ relief – the upper two ๐“ป rows contain the cartouches of earlier pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฅ, while the bottom row shows Rameses IIโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“œ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“Šƒ throne name and birth name alternating – this is the part we will be reading today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ!

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! We are going to start from the right!

๐“…“๐“‚ž๐“‚ž – By Permission Of

๐“…ญ๐“‡ณ – Son of Ra

๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“œ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“Šƒ – Rameses II, Beloved of Amun (birth name)

๐“…“๐“‚ž๐“‚ž – By Permission Of

๐“†ฅ – King of Upper and Lower Egypt

๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ– Rameses II (โ€œUsermaatreโ€ throne name)

๐“…“๐“‚ž๐“‚ž – By Permission Of

๐“…ญ๐“‡ณ – Son of Ra

๐“ฉ๐“ˆ˜๐“œ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ – Rameses II (birth name variant)

โ€œBy Permission Of ๐“…“๐“‚ž๐“‚žโ€ is meant to signify that Rameses II ๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ– commissioned the creation of this King List! Itโ€™s also cool how different variants of the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– were used throughout the relief!

The point of the King Lists was not to preserve history for future generations, rather the main objective was to glorify the gods ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน, and as we know, pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฅ were considered gods ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน on Earth. These lists allowed Seti I ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“  and Rameses II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“œ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“Šƒ to assert their legitimacy amongst the old pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฅ of Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š–.

“Rameses II Adoring the Sphinx at Giza”

This limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ relief is called โ€œRameses II adoring the Sphinx at Gizaโ€ and it is such a beautiful ๐“„ค piece! Letโ€™s take a closer look!

By the time Rameses II ๐“ฉ๐“›๐“ˆ˜๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ was pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป, the Sphinx ๐“Ž›๐“…ฑ๐“ƒญ๐“ค at Giza was already ancient (~1200 years old) – which is almost mind blowing to think about!!! During the 18th Dynasty (the dynasty before Rameses II ๐“ฉ๐“›๐“ˆ˜๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“) the cult of the Sphinx ๐“Ž›๐“…ฑ๐“ƒญ๐“ค began to reach its peak in terms of religious importance.

During the first ๐“ƒ year of their reign ๐“ˆŽ๐“๐“‹พ, the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป would take a trip to the Sphinx ๐“Ž›๐“…ฑ๐“ƒญ๐“ค as almost a right of passage. They would then build monuments ๐“ ๐“ to document the occasion. This relief is representative of that trip that Rameses II ๐“ฉ๐“›๐“ˆ˜๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ took!

The New Kingdom pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“† knew the Sphinx ๐“Ž›๐“…ฑ๐“ƒญ๐“ค as Hor-em-Akhet ๐“…ƒ๐“๐“ˆŒ which translates to โ€œHorus in the Horizon.โ€ The name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– most likely came from the fact that the Sphinxโ€™s ๐“Ž›๐“…ฑ๐“ƒญ๐“ค head is seen in between Khufu ๐“๐“†‘๐“…ฑ and Khafreโ€™s ๐“‡ณ๐“ˆ๐“†‘ pyramids ๐“‹๐“…“๐“‚‹๐“‰ด๐“ช, and can appear like the sun disc ๐“‡ณ when approached from a certain direction. Itโ€™s definitely a creative name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–!

Letโ€™s read some simple hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! Hereโ€™s a breakdown of the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– Horus in the Horizon ๐“…ƒ๐“๐“ˆŒ! Can you spot this on the relief?

๐“…ƒ – Horus

๐“ – em = in the

๐“ˆŒ – akhet = horizon

There are actually two ๐“ป different versions of this relief! If you look at the pictures above versus the pictures ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“ฆ below, the reliefs are facing two ๐“ป different directions!

For a closer hieroglyphic study, we are going to be looking at the relief facing the left because I was able to get better pictures ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“ฆ of the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช on this one! Both reliefs are pretty much identical except for the direction that they face!

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช! We are going to look at the picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ posted below. Some of the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช are missing, but I was able to infer what was being written:

๐“™ – Given

๐“‹น – Life

๐“ŽŸ๐“ˆ๐“ฅ – Lord of Appearances

๐“‡ณ๐“ฉ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‹ด๐“Œธ – Rameses II (Birth Name Variant) (this cartouche is too damaged for me to know which variant, so I made my best guess)

๐“ŽŸ๐“‡ฟ๐“‡ฟ – Lord of the Two Lands

๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ– – Usermaatre (Rameses II throne name)

๐“Šน๐“„ค – Perfect God

๐“Žธ๐“…“(๐“ฒ๐“…†)(๐“€ญ) – Khnum (these hieroglyphs are cut off, but my best guess is this is the start of the name of the god Khnum)

Hereโ€™s the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช translation for the picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ posted below:

๐“…ƒ – Horus

๐“ – in the

๐“ˆŒ  – Horizon

๐“™ – Given

๐“‹น – Life

๐“†‘ – His

๐“ŽŸ – All

๐“Šฝ – Stability

๐“Œ€ – Strength

๐“‹ด๐“ˆ–๐“ƒ€๐“œ – Health

๐“„ซ๐“„ฃ๐“ – Joy

๐“ŽŸ – All

๐“‡ณ๐“‡ – Like Ra

๐“‡ณ๐“ŽŸ – Every day

This beautiful ๐“„ค and unique relief is located at the Louvre in France!

Video – Replica Statue of Rameses II

This little replica of the Rameses II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ from the Museo Egizio in Torino was given to me by my Nonno, and I love it so much!

You can read more about this beautiful ๐“„ค statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ in my post about it!

Here is a picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ to show you where Rameses II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ (and a replica ushabti ๐“…ฑ๐“ˆ™๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ figure, also from the Museo Egizio) sits on my bookshelf!

Rameses II at the Museo Egizio

Todayโ€™s ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ pictures ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“ฆ are from Nonnoโ€™s point of view! While I have never been to the Museo Egizio in Torino, my Nonno had been there many times and always spoke so highly of it. He took these photos ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“ฆ on one of his trips there. He spoke about this statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ a lot because he thought it was just stunning ๐“„ค. It is one of my dreams to go to the Museo Egizio one day – I just wish Nonno and I could have gone there together ๐“ˆ–๐“Š—.

Rameses II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“

This granodiorite ๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“๐“๐“ŠŒ statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of Rameses II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ is one of the most majestic pieces in the museumโ€™s collection and one of the most lifelike statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช there is of Rameses II ๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ–. This may just be mine (and Nonnoโ€™s) opinion, but I think it is one of the most majestic of all of the pharaonic statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช (Besides Hatshepsutโ€™s of course)!!!

Rameses II ๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ– is depicted here wearing the khepresh crown ๐“†ฃ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ™๐“‹™ (also known as the blue crown) and he is holding a scepter ๐“‹พ in his hand. On his feet he is wearing sandals ๐“ฟ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“‹ธ๐“ช, but under those sandals ๐“ฟ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“‹ธ๐“ช are nine bows ๐“‰บ๐“๐“Œ”๐“ฆ which represent the enemies ๐“๐“†‘๐“๐“€๐“ช of Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š–!

On either side of Rameses IIโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ legs, there are two ๐“ป smaller figures. On the right side is Queen Nefertari ๐“๐“…‘๐“„ค๐“๐“‡‹๐“ฎ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“ and on the left is Rameses IIโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ and Nefertariโ€™s ๐“๐“…‘๐“„ค๐“๐“‡‹๐“ฎ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“ first ๐“ƒ born son ๐“…ญ Amunherkhepeshef ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ท๐“บ๐“„˜๐“€ผ.

While it may be difficult to see in the photographs, a special symbol appears on both sides of the statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ. This symbol, called the sema-tawy ๐“‹, is a combination of many different symbols all combined into one! Most prominently, it is thought to be representative of the lungs ๐“Šƒ๐“Œด๐“„ฅ๐“…ฑ๐“„บ and the windpipe ๐“„ฅ. The lungs ๐“Šƒ๐“Œด๐“„ฅ๐“…ฑ๐“„บ are a symbol of Upper Egypt ๐“‡“ and the windpipe ๐“„ฅ was a symbol of Lower Egypt ๐“†ค. Due to this, the sema-tawy ๐“‹ is thought to be the symbol of a unified Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š–.

The pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป was always referred to as the โ€œLord of the Two Lands ๐“ŽŸ๐“‡ฟ๐“‡ฟโ€ or โ€œKing of Upper and Lower Egypt ๐“†ฅโ€ because Upper ๐“‡“ and Lower ๐“†ค Egypt, although united, were in fact very different from each other. They each had their own natural resources, cultures and local gods ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน. The lung ๐“Šƒ๐“Œด๐“„ฅ๐“…ฑ๐“„บ and windpipe ๐“„ฅ design ๐“‹ was usually found on objects that belonged to the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป. In this case, it is on the side of one of Rameses II’s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ most beautiful ๐“„ค statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช!

Some Egyptologists think that this statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ looks like Seti I ๐“Šช๐“๐“Ž›๐“ฃ๐“‡Œ๐“Œธ๐“ˆ–, and that Rameses II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ usurped it from his own father ๐“‡‹๐“๐“€€. However, there are no signs of reworking on the cartouche or on the inscription ๐“Ž˜๐“…ฑ๐“Ž– as a whole, so the two ๐“ป pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฆ probably just resembled each other!ย

This statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ is dated to the first 30 ๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž† years of the reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ of Rameses II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“, because Nefertari ๐“๐“…‘๐“„ค๐“๐“‡‹๐“ฎ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“ died during Year 30 ๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž† of Rameses IIโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“.

Ancient Plagiarism – aka Usurping

This statue is very interesting because it was originally made for the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Amenemhat II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“…“๐“„‚๐“ during the 12th ๐“Ž†๐“ป Dynasty. However if you look at the hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช, the cartouches of Rameses II can be read! The pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฅ used to recycle statues all the time – this is a process known as usurping (taking one pharaohโ€™s monuments, erasing their name, and putting yours!). Itโ€™s kind of like ancient plagiarism!!

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!ย

๐“†ฅ(๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ–) King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Usermaatre
๐“…ญ๐“‡ณ(๐“ฉ๐“›๐“ˆ˜๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“) Son of Ra, Rameses

This statue is made of granodiorite, a type of volcanic (igneous) rock. It was quarried at Aswan and then transported up the Nile to Memphis, where it was sculpted.

Pylon Shaped Stela of Rameses II

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

Todayย ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณย we are going to be looking at a โ€œPylon Shaped Stela of Rameses IIโ€ (c.ย 1279โ€“1213 B.C.E.) at the MET. This piece is made of limestoneย ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ย and describes Rameses IIย ๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ–!ย

Here is the left two columns:

๐“ฉ๐“›๐“ˆ˜๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ – Rameses II (Birth Name)

๐“‰ก – Hathor

๐“ŽŸ๐“ – Lady

๐“†ญ๐“ – Sycamore

๐“‡”๐“ – Southern

๐“Œบ – Beloved

Put all together, this inscription reads: โ€œRameses II, Beloved of Hathor, Lady of the Southern Sycamore.โ€

Here are the right two columns:

๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ– – Rameses II (Throne Name)

๐“‰ก – Hathor

๐“ŽŸ๐“ – Lady

๐“‹€๐“๐“๐“ˆŠ – West

๐“Œบ – Beloved

Put all together, this inscription reads: โ€œRameses II, Beloved of Hathor, Lady of the West.โ€

Hathor ๐“‰ก has the title โ€œLady of the West ๐“ŽŸ๐“๐“‹€๐“๐“๐“ˆŠโ€ because of her roles was to provide peace and solace to the souls ๐“‚“๐“‚“๐“‚“ of the deceased ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ as they entered the afterlife ๐“‡ผ๐“„ฟ๐“๐“‰. Many people obviously associate Hathor ๐“‰ก with love, joy ๐“„ซ๐“๐“„ฃ, music ๐“‰”๐“‡Œ๐“†ธ etc, but she was also a prominent funerary goddess ๐“Šน๐“!

Hathor ๐“‰ก has the title โ€œLady of the Southern Sycamore ๐“ŽŸ๐“๐“†ญ๐“๐“‡”๐“โ€ or just โ€œLady of the Sycamore ๐“ŽŸ๐“๐“ˆ–๐“‰”๐“๐“†ญโ€ because the sycamore tree ๐“ˆ–๐“‰”๐“๐“†ญ was one of the native trees in Egypt ๐“†Ž๐“…“๐“๐“Š–, and it grew at the edge of the desert ๐“…Ÿ๐“‚‹๐“๐“ˆŠ! This would put it near necropolises, tombs ๐“‡‹๐“ซ๐“Šƒ๐“‰๐“ฆ etc, so it was associated with the dead ๐“…“๐“๐“ฑ! Hathor ๐“‰ก was considered one of the tree goddesses ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“, along with Isis ๐“Šจ๐“๐“ฅ and Nut ๐“Œ๐“๐“‡ฏ๐“€ญ.

The Horus Name of Rameses II

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

Today ๐“‡๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‡ณ we are going to be looking at the Horus Name for the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป Rameses II! So far, I have really only spoken about the Throne Name (๐“‡ณ๐“„Š๐“ง๐“‡ณ๐“‰๐“ˆ–) and the Birth Name (๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“), so letโ€™s take a closer look at the Horus Name!

The Horus Name is the oldest way that a pharaohโ€™s ๐“‰๐“‰ป name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– was written/identified and is one of five ๐“พ ways to write the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of a pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป. The Horus Name consists of three elements: the palace facade ๐“Š, Horus the Falcon ๐“…ƒ standing on top of the palace ๐“Š, and the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of the pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป within the palace ๐“Š. The palace ๐“Š hieroglyph ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ is pronounced like โ€œserekhโ€ and some Egyptologists are now referring to the Horus Name as the Serekh Name. This was basically the early version of the cartouche!

Rameses II ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ˜๐“‡ณ๐“บ๐“„Ÿ๐“‹ด๐“‡“ had a lot of different variations of his Horus Name, so letโ€™s take a look at the two ๐“ป that are pictured!

๐“‚ก๐“ƒ’๐“›๐“Œบ – โ€œStrong Bull, Beloved of Raโ€

๐“‚ก๐“ƒ’๐“ง๐“Œบ – โ€œStrong Bull, Beloved of Maatโ€

โ€œStrong Bull ๐“‚ก๐“ƒ’โ€œ was a very popular way to start off the Horus Name because bulls ๐“ƒ’๐“ƒ’๐“ƒ’ were a symbol of strength ๐“Œ€ and fertility, both of which are qualities that pharaohs ๐“‰๐“‰ป๐“ฆ wanted to have!
