This is certainly an interesting stela ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ธ for sure!
This stela ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ธ is made of limestone ๐๐๐๐ but the craftsmanship is kind ofโฆoff! This is very typical for work from the time period (1st Century B.C.E. – 4th Century A.D.). During the Greek and Roman periods, objects like amulets ๐๐ช๐ ๐ช, stelae ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ธ๐ช, statues ๐๐๐๐ญ๐พ๐ช, and more were so mass produced that the craftsmanship suffered. Letโs take a look at what is going on!ย
The top section of the stela ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ธ seems to be trying to follow the traditional Egyptian way – the winged ๐ง๐ณ๐๐ sun disc ๐ณ๐บ and the Uraeus ๐๐๐๐๐ are roughly carved but are definitely there! This design is known as โ Horus the Behdetiteโ and is a representation of Horus ๐ ๐ญ that is popular on stelae ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ธ๐ช. Under that, two ๐ป jackals ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฅ๐ฆ are depicted!
In the middle section, from the left, Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ is depicted holding an ankh ๐น or key which most likely symbolizes his association with/ability to access the underworld (a very Graeco-Roman version of Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ)! Then the four ๐ฝ people to the right of Anubis ๐๐๐ช๐ ฑ๐ฃ are identified by the Greek inscription below: “Pekysis, son of Aruotes, and his brother Pachoumis; Tbaikis the elder and Tbaikis the younger.” Pekysis is thought to be the man holding the torch! Osiris ๐น๐จ๐ญ is depicted all the way on the right!
Thanks to the MET for the Greek translation because I certainly donโt speak Greek!
