Here is a zoomed in view of an inscription ๐๐๐ฅ with the name ๐๐ of the god ๐น Ptah ๐ช๐๐๐ฑ from a large statue ๐๐๐๐ญ๐พ that originally belonged to the pharaoh ๐๐ป Amenemhat II ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐, however, the statue ๐๐๐๐ญ๐พ was usurped by Rameses II ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ด๐.
As we learned yesterday, Ptah ๐ช๐๐๐ฑ was the chief god ๐น of Memphis ๐ ๐๐ค๐๐๐ด๐ and was considered a great protector of Egypt ๐๐ ๐๐. In the Book of the Dead, Ptah ๐ช๐๐๐ฑ is referred to as โThe Master Architect,โ and โFramer of Everything in the Universeโ due to his role in โspeakingโ the world ๐พ๐พ into creation!
Letโs read some hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช! Now, these two ๐ป inscriptions ๐๐๐ฅ are divided by a line because they are part of a larger text that is read downwards; they are not meant to be read together! However, I really wanted the closeup of Ptahโs ๐ช๐๐๐ฑ name ๐๐, so we are going to read them this way from my picture ๐๐ ฑ๐๐ฆ!
You probably know the first phrase already:
๐๐ฟ๐ฟ – Lord of the Two Lands
(๐ณ๐๐ง๐ณ๐๐) – Rameses II (throne name Usermaatre)
๐ช๐๐๐ฑ – Ptah
๐ผ – Great (then the inscription continuesโฆ)
Ptah ๐ช๐๐๐ฑ can be written a couple of different ways in hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช, but the phonogram symbols are always the same. Sometimes, the determinative symbol is left out because of spacing issues! Once you can recognize the first three ๐ผ symbols, you are well on your way to finding Ptahโs name ๐๐ on monuments/artifacts!
Here are the different ways to write his name ๐๐:
๐ช๐๐๐ฑ
๐ช๐๐๐ญ
๐ช๐๐๐ฐ
๐ช๐๐
