Usually, a cartouche π πππ· enclosed the name ππ of a pharaoh ππ». The oval surrounding the names πππ¦ of the pharaoh ππ» was meant to be protection π ππ‘π from evil πππππ ¨ both in life πΉ and in the afterlife πΌπΏππ. During the 18th Dynasty, the name ππ of the Kingβs Great Wife πππ would also sometimes appear in a cartouche π πππ·.
Akhenaten ππππ³π ππ was not a pharaoh ππ» that followed tradition! Akhenatenβs ππππ³π ππ reign πΎππ, which archaeologists sometimes refer to as the βAmarna Revolutionβ is a period of less than 20 ππ years which showed big changes not only to the traditional Egyptian religion, but also changes to the traditional Egyptian art.
This fragment does not contain the cartouches π πππ·π¦ of the pharaoh ππ» Akhenaten ππππ³π ππ. Instead, the cartouches π πππ·π¦ are very long way to write the name ππ of Aten ππππ³, the sole sun π³πΊ deity πΉ in Akhenatenβs ππππ³π ππ new religion.Β
Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ! These are two π» of the βearlyβ cartouches π πππ·π¦ of the Aten ππππ³, as there were variations during the later part of the Amarna period. The two π» cartouches π πππ·π¦ are incomplete, but since we know what the cartouches π πππ·π¦ are supposed to say, I will translate both!
