This piece is known as an โOvoid Stoneโ or a โHammering Stoneโ and was probably used as a type of tool during building construction.
Letโs read some hieroglyphs ๐น๐๐ช! I divided the inscription into two parts, and then translated each of the individual words so you can get a sense of the sentence structure used in the Middle/New Egyptian language!! Hereโs the first row:
๐น๐๐ค(๐ณ๐ฆ๐)๐น๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ณ๐บ
๐น๐๐ค – Great Goddess
๐ณ๐ฆ๐ – Maatkare
๐น๐ – to make/to do/born of
๐ – she
๐ – for
๐ ๐๐๐- monument
๐ – father
๐ – her
๐๐ ๐๐ณ๐บ – Amun-Re
โThe Great Goddess, Maatkare, she made the monument for her father, Amun-Reโฆโ
And hereโs the second row:
๐๐๐ธ๐ฑ๐๐ท๐ธ๐๐ ๐๐ฆ๐๐ฆ๐ ฑ๐๐น๐๐น๐
๐๐ – in front of/at (a preposition)
๐ธ๐ฑ๐ – Stretching of the Cord
๐ท๐ธ – over
๐๐ ๐ – Amun
๐ฆ๐๐ฆ๐ ฑ๐ – Holiest of Holies
๐น๐๐น๐ – May She Live / That They Live
โโฆat the stretching of the cord over the Holiest of Holies Amun, May She Live!โ
The โStretching of the Cordโ was part of the foundation ritual that occurred when a building was constructed in ancient Egypt. โHoliest of Holiesโ is the name for Hatshepsutโs temple at Deir el-Bahri.
