Statue of Senemut – Video

This is a statue ๐“„š๐“ˆ–๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ of Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ holding a sistrum ๐“Šƒ๐“ˆ™๐“ˆ™๐“๐“ฃ. A sistrum ๐“Šƒ๐“ˆ™๐“ˆ™๐“๐“ฃ was a musical instrument (like a rattle/tambourine) that was associated with the goddess ๐“Šน๐“ Hathor ๐“‰ก. Sistrums ๐“Šƒ๐“ˆ™๐“ˆ™๐“๐“ฃ๐“ช usually had Hathorโ€™s ๐“‰ก head ๐“ถ๐“ค (complete with her cow ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹๐“๐“ƒ’ ears) on top of a long handle.ย

Itโ€™s interesting to see a statue ๐“„š๐“ˆ–๐“๐“ญ๐“€พ of Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ holding something other than Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช daughter Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค, because he is usually depicted with her.

Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ, although not of noble birth, became an extremely important figure during the reign of Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช  Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ was Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช closest advisor, the tutor for her daughter Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค, and the architect responsible for building her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari ๐“‚ฆ๐“‚‹๐“‚ฆ๐“ฅ๐“‰.

Putting a commoner in such a powerful position might have been a strategic move by Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช – it would pretty much guarantee that he remained loyal to her.ย

Name Stones of Senemut

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!

Iโ€™m sure doesnโ€™t come as a surprise to anyone that my favorite time period of Egyptian history is the reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ of Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช! These stones are dated to the 18th Dynasty reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“ of Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช and are inscribed ๐“Ž˜๐“…ฑ๐“Ž– with the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– of Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ. Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ was a non-royal man who rose to become the most important official ๐“‹ด๐“‚‹๐“€€ during Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช reign ๐“‹พ๐“ˆŽ๐“.ย

While these pieces may seem like some random limestone ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“ˆ™๐“Œ‰ blocks, they are actually what archaeologists refer to as โ€œName Stones.โ€ The Name Stones were built into Senemutโ€™s ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ฝ tomb chapel ๐“€ป๐“‹ด๐“‰ and were not meant to be seen – they were just meant to indicate that Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ took ownership of his tomb chapel ๐“€ป๐“‹ด๐“‰.

Iโ€™ve seen Senemutโ€™s name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ–appear a couple of different ways in hieroglyphs and here are the variations: ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ, ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ฝ, and ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…. Itโ€™s the determinative thatโ€™s changing, not the symbols that influence pronunciation!

Letโ€™s take a look at the hieroglyphs on each of the stones!ย

Name Stones
A name stone with the text “Overseer, Senemut” inscribed on it.

In the picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ above, the inscription ๐“Ž˜๐“…ฑ๐“Ž– states:ย

๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ฝ – Senemutย

Name Stone
A name stone with the text “Senemut, True of Voice” inscribed on it.

In the picture ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“ above, the inscription ๐“Ž˜๐“…ฑ๐“Ž– states:

Statue of Senemut and Neferure

This is a beautiful ๐“„ค๐“†‘๐“‚‹ statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“… and Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค – and I love these types of statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช because they were seemingly invented by Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“… himself and also give some insight into this time period!

Senemut and Neferure
A statue of Senemut holding Neferure (The Louvre)

Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…, although not of noble birth, became an extremely important figure during the reign of Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“. Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“… was Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช closest advisor, the tutor for her daughter Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค, and the architect responsible for building her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri ๐“‚ฆ๐“‚‹๐“‚ฆ๐“ฅ๐“‰. Putting a commoner in such a powerful position might have been a strategic move by Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ – it would pretty much guarantee that he remained loyal to her. But honestly, no one really knows how Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“… climbed the social ranks so dramatically and we probably never will!

This is a statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ of Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“… holding Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค, and many of these statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช exist, however, this one is a tiny bit different than some of the other similar statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช I have seen. This statue ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ shows Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค wrapped in a blanket and being held tight by Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…. Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค has a Uraeus ๐“‡‹๐“‚๐“‚‹๐“๐“†— on her head (like royalty) and also at her feet. Was this Uraeus ๐“‡‹๐“‚๐“‚‹๐“๐“†— on her head to show that Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช intended for Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค to rule as pharaoh ๐“‰๐“‰ป after her?

There are many differing theories on Senemutโ€™s relationship with Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“. Many believe (including myself) that they were having an affair. Thereโ€™s even graffiti from the tomb ๐“‡‹๐“ซ๐“Šƒ๐“‰ builders in some unfinished tombs ๐“‡‹๐“ซ๐“Šƒ๐“‰๐“ฆ that show that they too believed that Hatshepsut ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ and Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“… were romantically involved. Gossiping about relationships seems to have always been something that people have done!

It has even been speculated by some, based off of statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช such as the one I have pictured, that Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“… was actually Neferureโ€™s ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค father ๐“‡‹๐“๐“€€!

The Sarcophagus of Senemut

This large quartzite oval (that has been reconstructed from over 1200 pieces) is the Sarcophagus ๐“ŽŸ๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“๐“Šญ of Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ!ย

There are many interesting things about this sarcophagus ๐“ŽŸ๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“๐“Šญ! For one, it is actually painted ๐“ž๐“œ red ๐“‚ง๐“ˆ™๐“‚‹๐“…Ÿ so it looks more like red quartzite, which is more valuable! Another, is that it is extremely similar to Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช second sarcophagus ๐“ŽŸ๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“๐“Šญ in terms of composition/rock type, so they must have been quarried at the same time!

The inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ on the sarcophagus are from various chapters of the Book of the Dead, and many deities ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน such as Nut ๐“Œ๐“๐“‡ฏ๐“€ญ, Isis ๐“Šจ๐“๐“ฅ, Nephthys ๐“‰ ๐“๐“†‡, and Anubis ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“Šช๐“…ฑ๐“ƒฃ all make appearances along with the usual dedications that the deceased would make to these deities ๐“Šน๐“Šน๐“Šน. Unfortunately due to the state the sarcophagus ๐“ŽŸ๐“‹น๐“ˆ–๐“๐“Šญ was found in, many of the inscriptions ๐“Ÿ๐“›๐“ฅ are now fragmented, but Egyptologists can put together the pieces!

Some of Senemutโ€™s ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ many titles appear on the sarcophagus as well, such as Steward of Amun, Chief Steward of the King, Overseer of the Treasury, Granary, Fields, Cattle of Amun, a Controller of Works, and so many more!

Canopic Jar Lid Found in Senemut’s Tomb

This very simple and unassuming lid of a canopic jar was found in the tomb ๐“‡‹๐“ซ๐“Šƒ๐“‰ of Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ (can also be written without a determinative ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…). Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ rose to become the most important official ๐“‹ด๐“‚‹๐“€€ during Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช reign and held over 80 ๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž†๐“Ž† different titles.

Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ was referred to as a โ€œHigh Steward ๐“„‚๐“‚๐“€€ (literally translated as โ€œarm is in frontโ€), which meant he was much more than just an official ๐“‹ด๐“‚‹๐“€€ in Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช government. In a lot of inscriptions, Senemut is sometimes simply referred to as an overseer ๐“„“๐“‰๐“ค, since that seems to summarize his various roles. As the Chief Royal Architect, Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ supervised all of Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช building projects, including at least one of her massive obelisks ๐“‰ถ๐“‰ถ๐“‰ถ.

Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ was also the tutor for Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช daughter Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค, which is how he is depicted in statuary ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ a lot of the time. Some other common titles include Steward of Amun, Chief Steward of the King, Overseer of the Treasury, Granary, Fields, Cattle of Amun, a Controller of Works, and so many more! I guess Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ was a workaholic!

Back to the canopic jar lid – it is actually debated l if this lid represents Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ or not! Based on other statues ๐“๐“…ฑ๐“๐“€พ๐“ช of Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ, I personally think that the canopic jar lid is in Senemutโ€™s ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ likeness, however, that is just my inference/personal opinion. The lid is dated to the joint reign of Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช and Thutmosis III ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ (c. 1479โ€“1458 B.C.E.), however, based on what I have read the actual date this piece was made seems to be debated, even though it was found in Senemutโ€™s ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ tomb ๐“‡‹๐“ซ๐“Šƒ๐“‰.

Ostraca of Senemut

Ostraca are basically the ancient Egyptian version of a sketch pad or scrap paper! They were used by scribes ๐“Ÿ๐“€€๐“ช or artists to practice their craft! The ostraca were usually chips of limestone or broken pottery.

These ostraca at the MET are very awesome because they depict Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ!! Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ was Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ most trusted advisor (and in my opinion, they were definitely much closer than that ๐Ÿ˜œ). Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ was not only the tutor for Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡ณ๐“ฆ๐“‚“ daughter ๐“…ญ๐“ Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค ๐“„ค ๐“„ค, the royal architect in charge of Deir el-Bahri, but he was also the Steward to Amun ๐“†“๐“‰๐“บ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ– at Karnak.

The sketch of Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ on these ostraca are very similar to the sketches of Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ that are seen in his tomb!

These were always some of my favorite pieces to see as a kid! Not only because it was Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ, but also I loved seeing how the Egyptians ๐“†Ž๐“๐“€€๐“๐“ช used to do things!! Seeing the grids and seeing their โ€œsketch padsโ€ allowed me a glimpse into just how some of this incredible art was created!

Chair from the Tomb of Senemut’s Parents

This is a chair that belonged to Senemutโ€™s ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ parents! Senemut ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ was Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช most trusted advisor, architect, and the tutor for her daughter Neferure ๐“‡ณ๐“„ค๐“„ค๐“„ค. Senemutโ€™s ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ parents were buried in a tomb ๐“‡‹๐“ซ๐“Šƒ๐“‰ that was very close to his, and they were given burials that were fit for people of high status, due to Senemutโ€™s ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ position.

The chair is adorned with the Djed ๐“Šฝ and Tyet ๐“Žฌ symbols, and the god Bes ๐“ƒ€๐“‹ด๐“„œ is located in the center. I love how the legs of the chair look like lion ๐“Œณ๐“น๐“„ฟ๐“„› paws too!

“Osiris Figure of Hatnefer”

This piece, titled the โ€œOsiris Figure of Hatneferโ€ is dated to the joint reign of Hatshepsut ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช and Thutmosis III ๐“‡ณ๐“ ๐“†ฃ (New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, c. 1479โ€“1458 B.C.E.).

This wooden ๐“†ฑ๐“๐“บ piece was found in Senemutโ€™s ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“„ฟ tomb ๐“‡‹๐“ซ๐“Šƒ๐“‰, though it inscribed ๐“Ž˜๐“…ฑ๐“Ž– with the name ๐“‚‹๐“ˆ– Hatnefer ๐“„‚๐“„ค๐“. Hatnefer ๐“„‚๐“„ค๐“ was Senemutโ€™s ๐“Œข๐“ˆ–๐“…๐“€ผ mother ๐“…๐“๐“ and due to his status as Hatshepsutโ€™s ๐“‡‹๐“ ๐“ˆ–๐“Žน๐“๐“„‚๐“๐“€ผ๐“ช most trusted advisor, he was able to give his mother ๐“…๐“๐“ a proper burial.

Thisโ€Osiris Figure,โ€ which represents resurrection, is almost a cross between a ushabti ๐“†ท๐“„ฟ๐“ฏ๐“ƒ€๐“๐“ฎ๐“€พ(it contains the basic funerary text on it) and the popular Ptah-Sokar-Osiris figures of the Late Period. The Ptah-Sokar-Osiris figures always stood on a wooden base just like this. Ptah-Sokar-Osiris figures represented birth, death, and resurrection. Itโ€™s interesting to see how the art has evolved over the years!

Letโ€™s read some hieroglyphs ๐“Šน๐“Œƒ๐“ช!
๐“„ช๐“‡Œ๐“ – Venerated (I believe this is a variant of ๐“„ช๐“๐“‡Œ)
๐“๐“‚‹ – Before
๐“Šฉ๐“น – Osiris
๐“„‚๐“„ค๐“ – Hatnefer

I am always so amazed when wooden ๐“†ฑ๐“๐“บ pieces are still in such great condition – wood ๐“†ฑ๐“๐“บ is organic and it can break down very quickly as compared to a material like rock ๐“‡‹๐“ˆ–๐“‚‹๐“ˆ™.
