Letβs read some hieroglyphs πΉππͺ!
Today ππππ³ we are going to look at the birth name and the throne name cartouches π·π·π· of the pharaoh ππ» Seti II π£ππππͺπππ°! Seti I π£ππππͺπππ° and Seti II π£ππππͺπππ° have the same birth name so we know that these cartouches belong to Seti II π£ππππͺπππ° based on the throne name!
These pieces are inlays of the cartouche π πππ· , which mean that they were once part of a larger object. Seti II π£ππππͺπππ° (son π of Merenptah πΊπͺπππ§ππ΅π·πΊ) ruled πππΎ Egypt ππ ππ for a couple of years towards the end of the 19th Dynasty (New Kingdom).Β
Letβs look at the birth name first (left cartouche). Hereβs the birth name: π£ππππͺπππ°
π£π – Belongs to Seth
π- Beloved
π – Of
πͺπππ° – Ptah
So all π together ππ, the name ππ reads βThe one who belongs to Seth, Beloved of Ptah.β
Now letβs look at the throne name cartouche π πππ·! This inlay (the one on the right side) is very interesting because it is a combination of both the throne name and the birth name! Hereβs the throne name, which appears first: π³ππ£π¦ππ ππ
π³ – Ra
π – Strong One
π£π¦ – Manifestations
ππ π- Amun
π – Beloved
So all π together ππ, the the name ππ reads βThe Strong One of the Manifestations of Ra, Beloved of Amun.β The throne name is unique to Seti II π³ππ£π¦ππ ππ, so we know these inlays are his and not Seti Iβs π£ππππͺπππ°.
But we arenβt done!!! Underneath the throne name, the birth name appears! Itβs so weird to see a combination cartouche π πππ· like this and Iβm not gonna lie, when I saw this for the first π time I was confused for a second!
Hereβs the birth name (again) and this time itβs a slightly different variant: π£πππππͺπππ°
π£ππ – Belongs to Seth
π- Beloved
π – Of
πͺπππ° – Ptah
Also, if you notice in this cartouche π πππ·, the symbol for βSeth π£β is chiseled out. This is because the god πΉ Seth πππ‘π£ was considered to be an unfavorable deity πΉ!
