βCleopatraβs Needleβ aka the Obelisk πΆ in Central Park is one of the most beautiful π€ππ sights in Manhattan!
This obelisk πΆ (and another, which now resides in London) was not commissioned by Cleopatra VII ππππ―πͺπΏπ§πππΏπ; in fact, it was commissioned by Thutmosis III π³π π£ during his 18th Dynasty reign. The obelisks πΆ stood at the city of Heliopolis at one of Thutmosis IIIβs π³π π£ temples. The obelisk πΆ is made out of βAswan π΄πΉπππ²π granite π π³ππΆβ which was the third most used rock ππππ by the ancient Egyptians!
When the obelisks were discovered by the Romans, they were moved from Heliopolis to Alexandria and placed at a temple πππ dedicated to Julius Caesar. The temple πππ was commissioned by Cleopatra VII ππππ―πͺπΏπ§πππΏπ, which is probably why the obelisks have the nickname βCleopatraβs Needle.β
The two obelisks were given by the Egyptian government as gifts; one is in London, and one is in Central Park in NYC! The obelisk is super close to the MET, so itβs great to go and see before or after your museum trip!
Iβm going to do another post about the hieroglyphs πΉππͺ on the obelisk πΆ, so here is the link to that post!
